I picked-up a 1981 OPC Wax Box and...

I was wondering if 1981 OPC baseball wax boxes are really that difficult to locate? I noticed no packs or boxes were available on ebay nor BBCE.

So I picked-up a wax box (it is missing one pack) for $75 ($65 + $10). SCAN OF 1981 OPC WAX BOX

Looking at the PSA Population Report for this series, they just may be in short supply (or is it the opposite, with so much raw material, its not worth grading? I hope that is not the case? LOL!) (i.e., only 75 examples graded by PSA with just one PSA 10 and only nine PSA 9s!). I look forward in receiving this wax box. I will post my results as to my "finds" from this box that I purchased from the "odd ball specialist", ebay seller and store owner, ebay id: beman. (...so, for $75 bucks, I "took a shot!")

edit: P.S. Also: I should be receiving, any day now, my 1978 OPC wax box purchased from BBCE. I'll keep U-all informed! (now I'll have over 70 "packs to crack!").

GL, I have actually been trying to amass 1981 Topps (non OPC), so please share your results.

I have a couple of pretty nice cards that I need to share sometime, at least before I get them graded.

I also haven't seen many (if any) 1981 OPC rack or wax boxes.

    Bob:

People just do not get cards graded from that set, but for the stars. Not much interest outside of that.

If you get a centered Schmidt, please let me know. I've been looking for a copy for a long time now.

The only PSA 10 from the set, Bob Boone, was my submission.

Not too many Stars that grade PSA 9 (NQs) in this 1981 OPC baseball set either! (and U have this year's only PSA 10 - the Bob Boone card!). I hope I can pull some well centered stars "out of the box"? LOL!

    Gary Carter none!
    Rod Carew none!
    Geo. Brett none!
    Willie Stargell none!
    Tim Raines Rookie none!
    Johnny Bench none!
    Paul Molitor none!
    Harold Baines Rookie card none!
    "Lefty" Carlton none!
Mike Schmidt none! (edit: "I'll keep my eyes open"!!!)
    Tom "Terrific" none!
    Tony Perez none!
    Nolan Ryan three 9s!
    Pete Rose two 9s!
    Ricky Henderson one 9
    Yaz two 9s!
    Carlton Fisk one 9!
...and Bob Boone! ONE PSA 10!!!

...PLUS PLENTY OF OTHERS WITH NO PSAs AT ALL!

    Rob:

The centering really is all over the place. With Schmidt - 90% of the copies I see are dramatically off-center. Add in soft cuts, which leads to non-sharp corners, wax stains, gum stains and corner dings, and finding MINT 9 specimens is a chore and a half. Given that people don't put the set together very much - it is a player collector nightmare set. Moreso if you make a big deal out of the gray vs. white backs.

We took a trip to Canada in '81 so I bought a couple boxes. Still have them and they are 100% severe rough cuts... often all 4 sides of the card. Looks like they were cut with an extremely dull blade. I find it impossible to judge what grade they will receive. Good luck!

You bought from a good person. I have bought tons of Carew stuff off of Jody Lambert. Almost all have come back in high PSA grades.
Just bought a few more off of her store sight on ebay.
