Andre Dawson and his obsession.........

Hi there,

I posted this a few weeks ago and never heard back, although several members said they would help. If those members would still be willing to, I'd be happy to pay someone $15 via PayPal....

Back in the mid-to-late 1990's, I recall reading in a Beckett magazine that Andre Dawson had become obsessed with his own 1993 Refractor and was buying them up as fast as he could. I'd really like to have this magazine for part of my collection.

Does anyone have access to their old Beckett's and wouldn't mind thumbing through them for me? I'd appreciate it.

Best wishes.

Do you think the article was past 1993? I'm pretty sure I have most, if not, all of the '93 Becketts. I'll look through them and any ones past '93.
  • It was February 1996 (Mo Vaughn cover)....someone over on Beckett forums (that also visits here apparently) helped me out and I'll be sending the $15 to him as soon as I get his paypal ID !!!!!!!!!!

Thanks again, I love this forum.

I'm curious now. Why is he so obsessed with this card? If it because it's a cool looking card and it's his favorite or is it because he's not happy with the picture and is trying to rub out every copy in existence? Just wondering.

Funny thing...I remember buying '93 Refractors off of Kevin Hense way back when. Back before eBay...I actually think I bought a Dawson from him, as well...

I also purchased from Kevin Hense back in the day (believe it was through AOL). Wonder if he sells on Ebay now...

    DBH,
Is that what it was through (AOL)? I couldn't remember how (where) I dealt with him, but, now that you said it, AOL sounds familiar. It was some type of Buy, Sell, Trade board or something...I don't remember seeing him on eBay, though...

I purchased cards from him through the AOL message folders (buy/sell/trade, etc). It was during the mid 1990s.

So what's the verdict? Are Dawson refractors hard to find? Has he cornered the market? (As you can tell, I'm not a '93 Finest expert.)

Like most 1993 Finest refractors right now, the Dawson is not hard to find at all. According to PhilG, 17 went up for sale in the last 10 months and there's one up on Ebay right now.

I believe Dawson gave up on his quest a while ago and sold his collection off...

I think they're a little tougher than other cards (Beckett has it on the rumored SP list). But, I bought a 9 a few weeks ago for 50 bucks...

Dawson was always a class guy. I met him at card show in MI back the mid-80's. Rickey Henderson was supposed to be there, but he no showed (I guess MI in Nov was too cold for him). The promoter got Dawson to show up instead, but he didn't tell anyone. So I show up with a bunch of Rickey stuff to sign and no Dawsons. After the show he walked around while the dealers were packing up. I asked him if he would pose for photo, he said sure. But I didn't have a camera. So he waited for 20 min, while my dad drove up to the show.

We get ready for pic, he says "hold on" and grabs a bat from a dealer. "I want to make sure this picture looks cool." I think he finished 2nd in MVP voting that year and he did all that for a 10 year old kid.

Oh the hobby has really changed. Today you can't even talk to these guys without some Barney Fife getting in your face.

That's a cool story. Perhaps some HOF voters will consider such character traits next time around...
