The big bully 1769 7.64 kopek coin... (no joke in denomination)

I just got a 1769 5 kopek coin (yes, I know I said 7.6kopek image ) but this coin seemed to be some ridiciously amazing error coin... Gotta thank god for the great coin... I wasn't really lucky in getting any nice coins these few weeks, if not months.

The average mass of a 1757-1796 5 kopek monster is said to be approximately 40-50grams. It was during Ekaterina time when she declared all copper coins should have their denominations minted approximately to the metal content, and hence 50grams was fixed for 5kopeks.

Normally, you can find all sorts of error with 5 kopeks coin, such as off strike, double strike, overstrike, cracked planchet etc, but rarely do you find a severely underweight or a severely overweight 5kopek coin. I mean, these coins are already a monster with a mass of 50grams. To have 1 ruble worth of 5kopeks means that you got to carry around 1 kilogram worth of copper! And copper prices were strictly fixed as they were a valuable commodity at that time. To have a severely overweight 5kopek monster, in my opinion would get a mintmaster hanged and I believe the whole mint had too much vodka at that time.

So... this particular coin that I have is a massive 76.4grams. (Yes, this is severely overweight, he needs to go on a diet image ) and the edge thickness is at least 5.5-6mm!!!!!!!!!!! But do remember that as the denomination is supposely "backed" by the weight of the copper coin, this coin should be at least a 7.64kopek! image

What a horror!

Here are the pictures:

Comparsion of the overweight 5kopek against a common 5k... (but that is an overstriked coin...)

The same coins but the severely overweight is on top of the other 5k... needless to say, I am sure you can see the diference in the thickness.

What do you think? Some horrible error that has occured or a counterfeit coin? image

P.S. Does anyone have any idea what the "green" bits are? I tried to dip this coin into acetone for two hrs but it seemed to have ZERO effect!

It doesn't seem to be verediges nor PVC, but seemed to be some kind of paint? I mean, when I dipped into acetone, the dull green bits seem to spring into bright dark green, which make me suspect that it's paint... but I thought acetone could remove it...?

Congrats on the monster coin! Did they make piedforts back then?! Cool coin.

I don't think the green is paint; I believe it's either alloyed with the copper (unlikely) or some kind of corrosion. Don't worry about it.

Looks like verdigris, either learn to live with it, or use MS70 on it, and then learn to live with an unnatural color.
