Should a pitcher be MVP? Should a reliver be Cy Young?

Just curious what everyone's feelings are about this.

I've long felt that a pitcher, who only has the opportunity to help his team every fifth day, should have no business being allowed to compete for the MVP. The MVP should be someone who can be counted on day in and day out to help his club.

I think a reliver should, however, be allowed to compete for the Cy Young award, but his numbers and saves should have to be so overwhelming, that he can compensate for the incredible disparity of innings pitched. Gagne, when he reeled off all those saves in a row, and was an absolute lock down reliever all year, absolutely deserved it. A reliever with 30 something saves? There's no way he's worthy of it, regardless of his ERA.

Please don't pollute my threads with your yankee-biased nonsense.

  • I disagree 100%. Starting pitchers certainly deserve MVP awards. Yes, starters have an opportunity to help every 5th day... and the opportunity/influence/responsibility they deal with every fifth day is certainly 5 times that which faces a position player day in and out. A great starter can single handedly account for 20-30 wins for his team in a season (if you consider hard-luck ND where they pitch a solid game but don't get a win for whatever reason). For a championship team, that could amount to 1/5 or even 1/4 of the team's wins for a season.

Anyone who doesn't acknowledge Pedro Martinez as the rightful winner of the 99 MVP is clearly smoking crack. I'll even toss a bone out to Gemmy to show I'm not just being a homer here and say Mattingly should've won the MVP in 86 instead of Clemens. But the rare, season-for-the-ages pitching performances certainly deserves credit for being considered the Most Valuable Player for a season.

Relivers, absolutely positively no way. Saves are an overblown stat, and all "closers" do is prevent a team from losing - which is obviously very important don't get me wrong (as we've observed all year in Boston). But that's the closer's job - don't screw up, don't lose, for 1 inning. As provided value to a team, they don't even come close to starters.
  • Ditto for Cy Young. Relief pitchers in general are disgustingly overrated and deserve no acknowledgement when compared to starters. A "closer" recording 100 saves ain't as valuable as a starter who wins 20.
  • Let them have the Rolaids award.

    Wanna bet?
  • Yes Gemmy let's bet. That'll solve it.

I'm beginning to see why people complain about your nonesensical responses.

You're just beginning to see it?
  • I guess I've known it all along.

It's just increasing ridiculous that an interesting sports discussion thread (fairly rare for this board) deteriorates to "wanna bet". Next thing you know, he'll call me a stupidhead boogerface and hold his breath until he gets a cookie.

It's either that or he'll try to veer the discussion off course as soon as he's proven wrong (which is often) or he doesn't get his way (which is as often).

Doogie Howser, I guess you don't know when I jest.
