  • Thanks for starting two different threads to spam your stuff. I think you set your minimum a tad high here. The Jordan can be had for $250, the Stockton for $125, and the Rodman for around $70. everything else can be had for less than $20 including the PSA 9 Pippen and Miller RCs, and the PSA 9 commons/semis go for around $3. If you broke it up and sold individually, you would get around $800 and get hurt a lot more on ebay/paypal fees. Why would somebody buy it for $750 if they can put it together cheaper if they are a collector, and there's no room to profit if they're a flipper?

Actually, I haven't seen the Jordan go for less than $350, the Stockton generally ends in the $125 to $150 range and your Rodman estimate is on point. That's nearly $600 just in those three cards alone. PSA 9 Pippens & Millers are usually closing at $30 a piece. If you say that there are 100 commons out of the 132 (which is probably not too far off), then you are looking at $300 just in the commons placing the "eBay value" at nearly $1000 right there. Now, that's not counting the fact that you'll have those star cards to turn for those registry sets out there....Malone, Magic, Bird, Drexler, Olajuwon, Barkley, I.Thomas, etc.

So, I don't think that I set the minimum too high. Even a 'flipper' could end up making a nice $200 to $300 based on these numbers above alone.

Looks like that Jordan snuck through. Pippen's were averaging $30 when I was tracking them. Now, based on your information, I can see that they are closer to $20-25.

But, still doesn't change the overall value by more than $100. So, a 'flipper' can still make $100 to $200 easily.

I would think that the time and effort put into completing the set is worth some value if not just adding the $2-$3 shipping per card you would get hit with if you bought them all seperately
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY
  • ArnyVeeArnyVee Posts: 4,245 ✭✭
Thanks mtcards. We didn't even factor in shipping on all of these cards seperately or in small lots as well.

But, I understand what CDsNuts is saying. For an investor or someone wanting to 'flip' the set, it has to make sense financially. Unfortunately for me, I can't include the "took a long time and chasing down cards" fee that I should. image

I sold my set a few months back, missing 2 cards and Jordan, Stockton, Rodman, and Miller all PSA 9, but more commons in PSA 10. It was .01 behind Arny's on the PSA Registry and it sold for over $1000 (pretty sure it was $1150) to another registry member who combined it with his set for a GPA just under 10.00. I would expect Arny's set to go for just under $1000 with a couple snipe bids in the last few seconds.

Although if I were you Arny, I would probably go back and edit the listing and add a "Buy it Now" price. It may get hit, or it may push someone to put the minimum bid on it just to reserve a bidding spot near the end. Either way, good luck with it, STEVE.

Edit added: All this "flipper" talk is ironic given Arny's icon.

    Thanks Steve.

Interesting that you say that. I just got a Buy It Now done on my sticker set for $150.00. It's a tough one to put together and it had 9 of the 11 stickers included.

I think that I'll put a BIN on it to spark some interest. image

Oh, and I was definitely laughing with that "flipper" comment!

  • Good idea to go with a BIN. Just out of curiosity, why did you decide on letting the 88/89 sets go? Always been one of my favorite BK sets because the packs were always fun to open with getting a big RC or Jordan in almost every pack.

Actually, I didn't want to, but I have to. In order to keep my collection going, I needed to sell off some of my stuff. I'm working on a 1972 Topps Baseball Set (81% complete) and a 1975 Topps Mini Baseball Set along with being tempted by my all time favorite 1957 Topps Baseball. So, if I decide to go with the '57s, I might have to end up selling off my '72 set. But, I want to sell most of my other raw cards and autographed material before going that route.

    We'll see. image

  • I hear ya. Too many cards to buy so something's gotta be sacrificed. Probably better to sell the 88/89 sets because those will be a little easier to get back if your ship comes in. I'm still waiting for mine. Good luck on the auction. Also, if you do scan the PSA 10 Jordan, Stockton, and Rodman for that guy, I think you can also add the pics to the auction listing. Might be a little more enticing with a perfectly centered Jordan staring at potential bidders.

I've received two offers at or near my buy it now. The person that is interested in it at the full buy it now is not the most reliable, but the other offer is a little bit less than my buy it now and is a solid buyer.

I'm looking to my PSA boards brothers for advice! image

Given what mine went for, I would say sell it, if it is truly a solid, reliable buyer. You can end the auction early using the "no longer available for sale" excuse with ebay, and save some fees also. The only reason that you're sellling it is the $$$ and that's what you'll be getting. The set can always be rebuilt later at about the same cost (maybe lower), and you'll have the cash now for other interests. That is why I sold mine, and I was right, as I could've bought your set and replaced mine at the same $$$, if that's what I wanted to do. Plenty of unopened and already graded is plentiful also. In the end, SELL, SELL, SELL!

    Good Luck, STEVE.
  • Maybe its me, but the SMR online must be WAY out of date. It says: "there is only one PSA 10 Jordan currently, the price is very volatile the only PSA 10 sold for $23,500 in 1999"

When I went to the population report it said that out of 6,655 graded, 144 have received a 10!
Wow. That can be an expensive mistake for someone.........
  • gameusedhoopgameusedhoop Posts: 3,592 ✭✭✭✭
That PSA 10 quote was for the Jordan sticker, not the regular card. Your POP quote is for the regular card I believe, as my subscription ran out Sept 16th.

Edited, because I don't proofread and can't type.
  • The quote was taken from the regular set page. The sticker lists for 10,000 in PSA 10 on the sticker page. PSA better update the page or hire a proof reader.........
  • ArnyVeeArnyVee Posts: 4,245 ✭✭
Yes, they had the same comment in the 'sticker' set (which I just sold) and for some reason placed it in the 'regular' card section of their SMR online. That's when there was only 1 sticker at PSA 10 and now there's 3 if I remember correctly.

Still mulling over my options.....now I have over 20 buyers "watching" my set. Hmm....not sure if I should just sell it outright or take the risk.

You would think that on of those 20 watchers would put in the minimum bid of $750 to keep you from selling off of ebay. Once there is a bid placed it would be nearly impossible for you to end it early ethically to sell it offline. I think if a watcher is serious he would be covering his butt with a minimum bid. I still say sell it if you have a serious offer in hand that you are happy with. Look at it this way, when you listed it you would have be OK with selling it at $750, hence your minimum bid, therefore anything close to your "Buy it Now" should be a no brainer. Just my .02, STEVE.
  • ArnyVeeArnyVee Posts: 4,245 ✭✭
    Thanks for your thoughts Steve.

I wouldn't have been "happy", per say, with the $750, but I didn't want to take anything less than that. But, I see what you're saying. Truthfully, I was hoping for a bit of a bidding war to drive the price up in the $1100-1200 range which is what I wanted for the set.

Oh well, we'll see what happens. I think that I might end up taking the serious offer if the 'other' guy doesn't come through before the end of today.

Took the 'serious' offer (after he upped it another $50 image ) and it officially 'ended' for $1050.00! The set is now 'off the Bay'.

Thanks to all of you that I was able to bounce ideas and thoughts off of.

Not only did you get the $1050, you saved over $28 in final value fees on ebay. Better to take the sure thing than hope for the best later on. I think you did pretty well with it overall. Congrats, STEVE.

For those of you that have retired or sold off sets in the past, do you simply delete every card at the same time from your set registry and then click on validate so that it becomes 'retired'? Or, does it even matter now that I've slipped to #6 all time?

It's automatically retired when it is deleted being 90% + finished. When you get to the page where your choice is edit/add a set there is also an option for delete a set. Pick it, choose the set to delete. You will be prompted with are you sure? Click yes, then it will say the set is deleted. If you check the all time top 5 sets, just under that is a link for the entire all time finest list. Your set will still be there with mine, but it will soon disappear on the currently finest list.
