Hockey men, the 1980s are almost over.

I was thinking about this since the announced retirements of Al MacInnis, Mark Messier, Ron Francis, Paul Coffey, and even James Patrick:
Who is still around who had a rookie card produced in the 1980s, arguably the golden years of hockey rookie cards?

1983-84 Scott Stevens
1984-85 Chris Chelios
1984-85 Steve Yzerman
1985-86 Mario Lemieux
1987-88 Luc Robitaille
1988-89 Brett Hull
1988-89 Pierre Turgeon
1989-90 Joe Sakic
1989-90 Brian Leetch

Am I missing any?

  • Not quite a star on that level, but Trevor Linden is still kicking around. RC is 89-90 as well.

Gary Roberts, Joe Nieuwendyk, Dave Andreychuk.

Also, Stevens (sadly) announced his retirement about a week ago or so image

  • Madano?

    Lee
  • Steve Thomas ( 1986-87 OPC ) is currently in Maple Leafs training camp.
For anyone saying Steve who?, he has 421 career goals in the regular season + 54 more in the playoffs.

Yawie, I too thought of Burke (1988-89 OPC ) currently with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

There were/are many horrible aspects of the NHL lockout, but one of them has to be the fact that guys like Messier couldn't retire in style.

If the lockout never happend I bet most of them wouldn't have retired.. They had a full season off to spend with their families and probably thought hey this is pretty nice..

I'm glad Yzerman is back for another year..

Brett Hull really got hurt from the lockout.. He's four or five healthy seasons away from taking the #1 spot in my opinion.

    All time goal scorers..

    1 Wayne Gretzky (1979-1999) 894
    2 Gordie Howe (1946-1980) 801
    3 Brett Hull (1985-2004) 741

  • From what I remember, Steve Thomas had one heck of a slap shot when he played with the Hawks.

Thats what I was thinking. I always wanted his #32 jersey and then he got traded. Oh well.

Duh, I originally meant to mention Nieuwendyk and Shanahan (especially since I'm a Wings fan). I noticed someone signed Scott Young (89-90 OPC) and I believe Ron Tugnutt (also '89-90 OPC) might be bumping around somewhere. And yes, I forgot that Andreychuk signed for one more season in the sun (or snowfall depending where the Lightning were playing image) I hadn't heard about Scott Stevens. Probably the most intimidating defenseman of his generation.

For other players I would agree, but Messier blew his chance to go out in style years ago.

I dont usually like Chris Berman nicknames, but one of my favorites was: Ron "Sometimes you feel like a Tug-nutt, sometimes you don't.."

Yes, I'm sure Mess doesn't like to be reminded of the Vancouver debacle.
  • Scott Stevens announced he was retiring.
The beatings will continue until morale improves.
  • Madano. How about Jagr? 1990?
  • Cam Neely? Is that a joke? Unless by "still around" you mean retired 8 years ago, had a bit part in a Farrelly brothers movie, and had his number retired by the Bruins!

Guys like Jagr, Modano, Roenick, Sundin, Nolan, etc etc played their first full season in 1990-91.
