My 1971 Topps Set Now Over 80% Complete!

After much dedication for about the last year, I have doubled the size of my 71 set. I went from about 40% a year ago to 80% now. On my limited budget, that has been quite tough. I am finding now that I am starting to hit a wall as far as finding the cards I need. I almost have the high series complete; I predominately need low to middle number commons. Those commons, as I am finding, are not graded as much as the highs. There always seems to be a run of high numbers on eBay at any given time. The fact that I will take 7s probably makes it even harder.

Well, my source of quality raw is about spent and finding what I need on eBay is presenting more of a challenge. I remain hopeful though that I can finish this monster up, finally, within the next year to a year and a half's time. My hats off again to those of you who have finished this wicked set.

  • Good luck Matt! It is definitely a slow process when you are trying to complete the set on a budget. I think my set is pretty much finished except for upgrades that I can pick up cheap and upgrades for my Oriole and Red team sets. I have pretty much given up on the idea of getting upgrades through submitting cards myself. Based upon my submission under the last special, I have a bunch of raw cards in PSA 7 and very few in PSA 8 or better.

  • Keep pluggin' Mefer. Mike and I are two of the fortunate
ones already at 100% and I can tell you the feeling once
you get there is awesome. You need to check out those
eBay listings more closely though. I just had a listing end
for a NM-MT PSA 8 card you need - only $9.99 and no bids.
I sent you an e-mail though with a beneficial trade proposal
for you so you still may end up with it.

Check it out and get back to me.

Wow....I might tackle this one some time in the future. But, for now, congratulations on that great task!

I know that I'm at 81% with the '72 set and it feels great....I would imagine that the '71 poses an even greater challenge with the condition sensitivity. Good luck with the rest!

  • Mefer- "These are the times that try mens souls". 71 is the black beast of baseball. To tame this set you have to be patient. The fact that you are happy with 7's helps, but don't not check the PSA 8 auctions. Some have been slipping through at nice prices. keep trolling Ebay and checking with others you have reached 100%. Many times when someone upgrades a card to PSA 8 or 9, they will look to sell their lower grade. Keeping track of other set registry upgrades can lead to some cards for your set.
