question about 1952 Mantle reprints

I'm sure the subject of '52 Topps Mantle scams is a tired one around here. At least when I was lurking it seemed to come up a lot. But my question is about the '83 reprints.

These have white backs with red ink, and they say REPRINT, plus they are sized like modern Topps -- so there is no danger of mistaking them for the real thing. Still, the set and especially #311 have value as collector items and sell for a decent amount. I have heard of the Mantle in a PSA holder selling for close to three figures, and the whole set is usually $175 or more, much more if factory sealed. We all know that.

But now there seem to be reprints of the reprints. I am seeing #311 all over eBay for a couple bucks each, sometimes even in lots. They look like the '83 reprints, with the white and red backs. They aren't the 1996 reprints with the gold stamp. They look just like the '83 issue, front and back. Are people copying these onto card stock with their inkjets, or did Topps issue another authorized '52 Mantle reprint with the white and red back? I can't believe people are breaking up the factory '83 reprint sets to sell off the Mantles for $2!
