Today's coin show purchase

Sweden 1803 1/4 Skilling. Any grade opinions? The photos are nice and large so wybrit can see them with his old eyes. Coin is slightly darker than images.

Copper is a really neat metal, it is almost like it is alive. With time high grade copper coins can take on a warm glow and no two are alike.

Nice coin; it appears that it had been dipped in acetone (not a bad thing) and the verdigris/crud in between the devices turned from green to light gray/green.

As for grade, I'd hazzard a conservative XF-45.

I've never seen one before, so I wouldn't try to grade it. - Preussen

That's the only thing that worried me. But it isn't as obvious on the coin as it is in the huge image. I figured for a coin 202 years old I can accept a little crud.

  • Very nice. These usually are clipped and it's unusual to see a complete coin. image

It doesn't really bother me either, and it'd probably slab as is, if you were so inclined. I've had that kind of look on coins after an acetone bath, and I usually had great success in removing it (not always, and it depends on how long the crud has been there, or how "crusty" it is, which often it's not) with a long soak in olive oil followed by a gentle scrubbing with a soft toothbrush, followed by another acetone bath. In very many cases, the crud disappears easily.

I'll ignore ajaan's feeble attempt at humor, since the poor old sod will need Kelly to read these (and all) posts aloud to him... image

Not being a student of Swedish coins, I wouldn't know if the apparent wear on the crowns is die related or not. If the die/strike is weak, then you have a pretty high grade piece there.

I'll go EF40 on this one, just to be more conservative than Jester. image

Depending on where the soft strike ends and the rub begins, I could see this one going anywhere from 35 to 55.

Shot some new photos. These give the true color of the coin. But these images are a little blurrier.
