PVC!!!!!

I was going through some of my German patterns this morning and was shocked to see a PVC outbreak on one of my silver 25 Pfennig Goetz patterns image I guess it could be expected as I bought this piece while in Germany a year and a half ago and it was still residing in its vinyl flip. Luckily it was just a thin layer along the right side of the reverse. Acetone and distilled water cleaned it right up and it doesn't appear there was any lasting damage.

I just learned to inspect my entire collection on a regular basis....

We have all been there. Acetone is a good tool.

  • I lost 1/3rd of my collection to PVC damage about 5 years ago... so i know what you were thinking.

That won't happen again, first because i own none of the coin i had five years ago and secondly they are all in a coin cabinet now with no PVC or any plastics anywhere near!

Was it a toned piece? If so, did acetone affect the toning?

These vinyl flips are a painful and slow death for coins.

Acetone has never affected toning on any of my coins.

Now as a precaution, I dip every coin I buy in acetone (with the exception of coins from known and trusted sources); I don't want to take any chances.

I don't want to take any chances either, but personally, I try to avoid using the term "dip" when it's only acetone or Koinsolv. I "rinse" mine. image - Preussen

Good idea; I use the safe-flips too, and the "Eagle" brand mylar-window, hard plastic 2x2s . - Preussen

I've just been lazy and remiss in dealing with these pieces. As I said, I bought them directly from Moeller in Germany and he had each of the flips heat-sealed, which couldn't have helped matters I'd think.

I've got a box of air-tites but they never seem to be the right size... You know me, I'm mostly used to dealing in dinner plate sized material image

BTW, The acetone didn't hurt the toning...I knew that before I bathed the coin...

Of course you're right, Preussen! I don't dip, I bathe...

Here in Korea there are only vinyl flips. No mylar to be had. I have to order mylar from abroad. She doesn't seem to mind the business either. image

I have been using the vinyl flips for some of my cast coins just because I don't think they can really do any damage to them. Some of them are in pretty rough shape as it is. What more could happen? Not only that, I can get flips here that are just the right size for the Korean 5-mun coin, something between a US half dollar and Dollar size that I haven't been able to find elsewhere.

Here is a question: I have a cupronickel proof coin that is developing the infamous haze but it is in a mylar flip. I put it in myself after I acquired it. Could it be that that coin was already developing PVC-gunk before I put it into the mylar flip?

And another thing... why aren't all flips made from mylar?
  • Price factor there I believe, sumnon. When it comes down to price, immature coin collectors often grab the cheapest protection available - little to know that will kill their collection.

You can still get PVC damage even if you changed the enviroment if it has some PVC "gas" in it. Horrible chemical indeed, I wished it gets banned by tomorrow image Nevertheless, the only solution out is to use acetone and get rid of it as soon as you can before PVC eats the whole coin up image
