Will PSA special of 50's cards affect prices?

What is going to happen with the recent $6 per card for 1950's commons? Have the collectors of 60's and 70's stuff noticed a softening in the market after PSA runs a special? Does the bay get swamped with cards early after the special, and could there be deals to have until prices settle?

Any help appreciated.
Nate

Man, I sure hope so! I'm tired of waiting (and over paying) for some of the 50's cards I still need.

I imagine it will soften the prices on a few select years, but only for a short time. It'll probably also increase prices in some years ... as guys start focusing (or refocusing) or certain years they weren't real active in before. A few of the 50's years have been down in price lately, so there should be some nice bargians to be had, if a lot more of them start coming up for sale. I'd imagine PSA 7's will be pretty good buys all across the board.

Now if PSA would just do a 30's and 40's special ... that would be sweet!

It really all depends on the need for the cash of those that are selling. For instance, most smart sellers wait until a week or a time period where others have sold off most of their inventory of that particular year or era. Thus, creating more competition for those particular cards. But, if three or four sellers all sell at once, obviously that will soften the market temporarily.

It's going to be tough to soften the 50's market because so many folks want those and there's not a ton of high grade stuff there. There are still a decent amount of unopened 70s material and folks are still pulling mint cards out of packs as we speak. That makes the 70s a good one for collectors but not one that will break the bank. For example, I've been building the 72 set (great set, but a monster to put together!) and although you'll have the occasional star card going for $100-150 (Aaron, Rose, Ryan, etc) in PSA 8 shape while you can easily see a common card in that price range for a PSA 8 in some of the 50s sets.

It's going to take a lot of submitting to get them down to that level for the 50s stuff. I haven't done any research on the 60s cards though, so I can't speak on that.

I had thought about this as well but if you think about it, it's only a drop from $7 to $6 per card. That's not much plus I suspect the dealers are still submitting as they have always had regardless of specials.

I would hope there would be an influx of PSA 5-6 cards on the early Bowmans.

I think that '50's prices will remain strong no matter what. There is less and less material out there and a lot of collectors who want these years .....and in different levels of grades. Just my humble opinion.

I was also wondering the same thing. I believe it was Loth that stated that they were grading some years so tough that the 5-6 were no longer a losing deal. I plan to pick up a few of the cards I need from the 57 set and I hope they come down alittle. But, I dont think it will happen....

Maybe it's just me, but lately I've been getting mid-graded (PSA 4,5,6) 1953, 1954, and 1955 Topps cards on ebay for less than I've paid in a few years, mostly from joesvintagesportscards and dd9191 (both sellers I highly recommend, by the way). Certainly there have been more mid-grade cards available from these years in the last few weeks. It looks to me like some sellers took advantage of the special to send in either complete or nearly complete sets. I've been loving it!

I totally expected to see prices come down but based on the auctions I have seen this month, the opposite has happened.

yup, too many high bidders on 8's have increased the "must have" bidders on 7's. In turn, it has help certain PSA 6's. At least for the 55's. I know Smallstocks does the 54's as well, so maybe he can give more info on that issue.
