GRADE REVEALED--What do you think of this 1798 dollar? What is the grade?

What do you think of this 1798 dollar? Also, what do you think the grade is? I don't know a lot about these coins, but it seems like it is somewhat nice. I also think there are a lot of different varieties of dollars of this era. Does anyone know what variety this might be? thanks.

    VF30 - BB-113 (fairly common).

That coin should make it into the circle of lust pretty easily.

i love the rims on the obverse except at 11 pm and the reverse i like the rims

baking sodaed long ago and for a large eagle bust dollar overall it is slightly below average in terms of problems and eye appeal

I think it's VF-35, but I bet it's sitting in an EF-40 holder. I don't like the scratch on the reverse shield on an expensive coin like this. I think it's decent/average for the grade.

It is in an XF-45 PCGS holder. It looks a little overgraded to me, especially in light of what everyone has said. What do you think?

I was thinking VFish when I posted that. But XF45? I still like the coin (at VF levels), but not for the price it's probably 'expected' to fetch in an 45 holder.

I could stretch my original VF30 to VF35 on a good day, not XF. The tail feathers make XF.image

xf-45??? you gotta be kidding me. there's no way in he11 should that be graded xf-anything by a "professional".

guess i'll just never get used to how coins like this get so overgraded by pcgs (& others of course). but it's a sad commentary on the state of today's grading standards (if there even are any)

it's a very nice coin, but xf it ain't.

VF-30 seems right. With Buffalo Nickels having half a horn getting slabbed in VF-XF grades these days, I refuse to rely on TPGs to tell me how much I should pay.

IMO it's an XF40-. It could slip into a 35 due to the excessive wear on the center of the reverse.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

I think it's too distraction-free and too visually appealing not to get the bump to XF40, although 45 seems like a stretch.

    Nice coin!
    When in doubt, don't.

VF35 - XF40. Reverse looks weaker, but hair detail is strong on obverse is strong. My first impression was XF40, so I will go with that.

    35, just another opinion.

The obverse looks like a just miss EF. The reverse looks like a VF25. There is considerable wear but the central shield is strong.

Obverse is EF45 and 1798 reverse is always weak. PCGS will assign the grade base on obverse.
If this is a 1799 dollar, it will be in an EF40 holder.

    Just my two cents. image
