Numbered card 660, this is a high number from the '70 Topps set. A tough third year card, I hope you enjoy collecting!

How come the top and right border appear to be the same size, but that left border is quite smaller?

  • The auction said it is "possibly scarcer than the 1968 rookie card," which made me curious enough to check the population report of PSA graded examples. 1970 is actually more than 3 times as hard to find than the rookie overall. Somebody was talking about 1968 vending cases awhile ago, I guess that explains these numbers. No vending cases of 1970 high numbers?

    1970 Topps: 723 total, 262 PSA 8, 35 PSA 9, 2 PSA 10

While I don't doubt that the 70 is a tough card, the numbers disparity is more due to the fact that more Bench rookies are likely to have been submitted - just because it's his rookie card.

  • I remember a story about a few cards that were perceived as "toughies" back in the late 70's that were destoyed in a fire from someone that was hoarding them in huge bricks. The cards were the 67 B. Robby, 70 Bench and 71 Garvey (there could have been a couple more sprinkled in). Maybe it was to drive up the price of the "tough high numbers" (which actually were garnering some unbelievable high prices in the 70's), or if it was just one of those hobby lure stories I cant verify....
