Any thoughts on MJ Roop?

I just received my $70 box and was dissappointed in it's construction, quality,etc.. I guess i was expecting better for my money. I hate to say this, but it looks like something i would have made during shop class in Jr. High. For the money the spent, i could have picked up a nice small GUN briefcase for the same amount with a built in liner. I think this will be my one and only purchase. I already have a large gun safe that is stacked with guns, cards, unopened product and the like. I may just have to go to smaller floor size safes.

I wasn't disappointed by the quality of the wood boxes, per se, but I agree that they're terribly overpriced. I bought three, but sometimes wonder if I should've just stuck with my trusty $4 cardboard long boxes.

  • I agree. I just bought 2 of the wooden boxes and am glad I dropped the extra $10 for personalization. At least that's something extra!

I thought this came aslo with a cloth protecter. Here was their reply:

"Thank you for your inquiry. The "Library Cloth Wrap" that is stated in our product description is actually what makes the Wooden Preservation Case "black," rather than a wood grain finish. The wrap is part of the box and not an additional accessory.

Please let me know if you have further questions or concerns over this or about any of our other products and services. We will look forward to becoming a further part of your collection soon."

My reply is ( not to them)--- Are you kidding me? What a joke!!

My experience was not very positive. I took advantage of the discounts offered on this site and purchased two boxes. 7 weeks later I received my boxes and was not very excited by the construction. They both were supposed to have card spacers and only 1 came. What irked me the most was the customer service. I started calling a month into waiting for my order to find out status. They told me the boxes ship out pretty quickly after order but in this case they were backordered. I quick email to update the status would have been in order. Each week I called and the story was it will be here soon until finally it arrived at the end of week 7. They sent me a coupon for 10% off the next order. That is a coupon I will not be using.

  • They are crap! You can make your own and have better quality at a more reasonable price.

I didnt purchase the wooden box, but I did purchase 2 Archiver Card Boxes last week. They have a scatch and dent sale, $30 (reg 39.95) and free shipping. both came with corner dents. I am extremely happy with the boxes for my graded cards. They fit all slabs, although the PSA have room side to side. I have all my slabs in Graded card bags to keep them from being scatched. Both are full now and organized and I will be purchasing 2 more within the next months. Very happy with service and fast shipping. Looks like I'm glad I didnt buy the wooden, since I havent seen a positive post about then. I will be purchasing binders to house my raw sets in the near future. Maybe this post will sway someone to stick to the Archiver.

I have a archiver box that is about a year old. It doesn't get handled much, but is sagging from wear and IMO isn't built to hold the weight of 176 slabs.
I've got a couple of wooden boxes, but just stocked up on the boxes that PSA sells. A fraction of the price and work better for my purposes.

I have 4 wooden preservation cases and am very pleased. They are expensive but I like mine. I think they are very well made. I am surprised by you guys' experiences.

I like 'em too, but I don't think they're worth $70. I could maybe see paying $45 for one, which is what the price would be with the Roop coupon you now get with a 2-year PSA membership, but wouldn't recommend these at the sticker price. Unless of course, money is little or no object to you.

Does PSA still sell its own boxes, Griffins? I remember seeing carboard ones and plastic ones on the site in the past, but can't seem to find them now. I'm guessing they're only available over the phone or at shows out west. And do you remember their cost and know their card capacity?

  • The PSA plastic boxes were on sale at the last tri-star show in SF about a couple of weeks ago. They were $5 each and could house, I think, around 20 psa regular sized slabs or 9 of the postcard sized slabs.

I have only purchased the roop archiver binders which, I believe, are also a bit overpriced. $55 for a binder with slipcover - sheesh. However, I do think that the binders are good quality and the printing/customization is a nice feature. I have also had to deal with their customer service on a messed up order, and have to praise them - they did a good job taking care of me. I think that as far as binder storage goes, they have the best product in the industry and their prices are high because, well, there is no other game in town right now.

Yawie - I started out a long while ago using the PSA black cardboard boxes for my collection. I believe they hold 60 slabs each, and they used to sell for $5.00 a box. I bought them mostly from the PSA booth at the Fort shows, but I have also had them shipped to me by PSA (shipping does get expensive). I don't use these anymore, since I need too many of them, but I bet you could get some by calling PSA.

I am surprised at all of the negative Roop-ness! They don't make anything cost-effective enough for me either, but everyone I know seems to like their products and service. If they sold those wooden boxes for $40 or so (as mentioned), I'd be a player for several.

So i guess the bottom line is that they are overpriced. What isn't nowadays?! Again , with as much stuff as i need to be stored i will be moving them to smaller floor gun safes.

I bought one of the woodgrain ones, and several of hte lesser expensive ones (Not sure what the call them). They hold 180 slabs (45 x 4), and at $40 each, I think they are a great deal.

I think people perhaps may have unrealistic expectations on what they money is going to get them...not sure, but I have always been beyond happy with the product.

Thanks, ct! If the shipping isn't too insane, I might end up recardboardifying my storage situation.

As for Roop, I honestly don't know what I was expecting. But I had heard nothing but praise at the time of my purchase, only to muster an "eh" when I received them. Nice, but not $70 nice. Just $40 or so nice.

Way overpriced. $70 is way too much for one of those boxes. It's just a box for crying out loud. The $70 could be much better spent on more cards.
  • I have bought about four things ever from MJ ROOP. I purchased that archive box. It seemed pretty good, but I couldn't use the PSA graded penny sleeves, because the sides would portrude and ruin the box, which Griffins mentioned above. If you want to have a nice looking box to hold PSA graded items than MJROOP is the way to go. The prices are high, but not horrible. They are a pretty specialized items, only card supplies, so their prices aren't going to be rock bottom. So I would give them a thumbs up, just don't expect the world.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

Good thing I had never bought from them. As much money as I have spent on my displays and storage boxes, I'm glad I got onto the Ultra-Pro divided plastic cases (which I assume are just like the PSA ones that hold about 20 slabs).
