All right, you got me... I'm going....DARKSIDE!!!

Preussen is to blame for this.... (partially, that is image . I've been sliding toward the darkside for awhile now anyway.). I just couldn't resist this one.. (and, while I appreciate your most generous buy back offer in your terms, you won't be getting this one back. Absolutely beautiful coin. How did it only 62 anyway?)

And, I saw (and was underbidder image on) one of these he was selling a few weeks back. As you can see, I just had to chase down another one. image

I guess it's becoming inevitable anyway, as US has just been, well... not as much fun any more. I know, I know, you don't have to buy all the high end expensive stuff... but we're just trained that way it seems. It's gotten to where I only buy (on average) a coin every 6 or 8 weeks. Too much 'messed with' and expensive US coinage out there. The few pieces that really measure up invariably come with exorbitant price tags for the quality level.

So, I've got my Krause set on the way, and I guess I'll have to start hanging out over here a little more. The US Forum guys don't seem like they'd take to kindly to a traitor... (they're just so tempermental over there, anyway...)

Hi: Glad to see you take the plunge, and welcome to the Darkside. I think you got a very nice start with the Coronation Thaler. I wanted to assist your post by adding the image back into the auction link, but I'm afraid I've already deleted it...sorry about that, but many of the folks her already saw it as we discussed NGC's harsh grade of only MS62. I expected MS63, and thought it had an honest shot at MS64. Feel free to check out my offerings on the link below image You will find a beautiful 1913 2 Mark "Defeat of Napoleon" commemorative there image Good Luck! - Preussen

Okay guys, I think I need to create a word for a coin form of penis envy.

"Numisphobia" is all I can come up with, a fear of having an inferior coin collection. Not exactly right, but close enough.

Think my wife would mind if I suspended my child support in lieu of some really sweet Russian 19th century silver?
    (I know, that's wrong.)

    Welcome new Darksiderimage
  • I don't think you guys have too much to worry about me attacking your areas of specialty any time soon. I'm just having too much fun buying 'anything neat' that comes around. Typical for a new darksider to be rather scattershot, and eventually settle in to a more focused area? I've collected mostly US type, with the occasional foray into date/mm set building, so I'll probably continue with 'world type' (I guess. Really dunno just yet, just having fun).

Just for an FMI, how many here do US as well? Or, did you lose the US 'bug' altogether after awhile? My interest in US hasn't really waned, but my purchasing ability relative to my budget has been really stretched lately. I've been gravitating to ORIGINAL VF to AU early 19th century type, and getting really dissatisfied with only being able to buy a coin every few months. Plus, having to pass on 95% of what's out there (the overdipped/stripped, cleaned, or just plain ugly pieces) has left very few within my range. I think that began the call to your side...

It's hard to cruise eBay, lookin' to spend money I've been sitting on for weeks now, not finding a single US piece that I a) like and b) can afford. So... one click on "World Coins" and here I end up. Nice little secret you guys have, all those cool, old pieces, no gradeflation BS to deal with, mostly still a raw market (I still don't really like slabs that much, even after 15 years collecting US), and all for vastly cheaper $$$ !!! Don't worry, I won't tell anyone else...image

That would be a fear of coins in general... image

Who said i was afraid of having an inferior collection? What i'm afraid of is not being able to finish the collection because the prices have gone up! image

Not that anyone is that bothered about Anglo-Saxon other than me and a few eccentric post-dead people on this board. If you haven't met his almighty dread lord of deadness, aka 'Dead King' then watch out for him. Also calls himself Æthelred, but only on saturdays. image

I collect US coins lukewarmly (mostly MS63 Washington Quarters these days), my interest wanes here and there because i like higher grade coins (generally older ones at that, i.e pre-1830s) and my pockets just aren't deep enough. Plus the whole obsession with slabbing totally turns me off, faster than jumping in a cold icy lake in the middle of January with icecubes between my toes.

I collect English coinage primarily and generally i like EFs or better where possible when collecting coins after 1600. More recently i've been focusing many centuries before that and i have to buy what turns up when i get the chance. As it stands i only buy one or two coins every month or two. Currently the last time i bought a coin was back in July. I'm not too bothered by the lack of buying though, i'd rather wait.

Patience is, unfortunately, in rather short supply for me. I'm in no hurry to 'complete' anything, but it just gets frustrating when I've a coin in mind (recently an EF to AUish No Stars Seated Lib Dime) which I've now 10x the money to buy. I've hit my mark for a choice piece, truly original and appealing, no problems, etc. ten times over anymore before I turn up a piece to actually buy. Unfortunately, the ones I've spotted in the meantime, in much higher mint state grades, my 10x won't even make an adequate down payment on. Way too much price spread between grade levels in earlier US, and the premiums for originality and appeal have become insane, in many cases.

This is one of the last US pieces I purchased, back in July, and I fought it up to well over double retail. It isn't even that 'amazingly' choice, just a nice piece for the grade with good eye appeal. Not a rare date, not that high grade, just a solid, nice coin.

The only US coins that I still have is my US 20th Century type set and it's at the bank and I haven't seen it in several yearsimage Now that I collect only darkside, I get to see new coins every week.

The only US coins I collect now are the state quarters for the map I have on the wall. I, like many here, started with US coins but became horrified by the prices. I used to collect bust halves and Morgans. Sold all my US coin collections to Michael Dixon about 5 years ago and never looked back.

    To clarify:

My misconceived word: numisphobia was actually referring to my inferiority complex, sadly enough. This is why I have to have a strict budget (like the one I just blew for the next three weeks) because otherwise, I spend myself into bankruptcy. There are so many sweet coins out there that it is hard for me to say no and the ones I can not afford are like teasing beautiful women. Only an inch away, but with burly bouncers waiting to break your legs once they realize your Visa has $7 in available credit on it.

I agree with the majority of the crowd here in saying that we find ourselves in a precarious situation. When I left the scene a decade ago it was like there was no market for high end stuff, and I saw super nice US stuff sitting in the display cases of my local guy for months until he went to his next major show. Now we have million dollar coins switching hands once a month and what were $100 coins in 1990 are now in the $2-3K range. On one hand, I welcome the publicity that coin collecting is getting from record breaking auctions, old legacy coins being auctioned off and the influx of new money and interest into the hobby in general. Even the Mint finally went along with two pretty sweet series (Quarters and Nickels) to push average joe collectors after decades of just squeezing the commems market and all of us old collectors are shut out of the higher grade stuff we thought we would be able to afford by now.

I used to collect Morgans, Mercs, Buffaloes, all of this stuff certified mind you, when I was in my teens and ended up selling them during college to finance a wonderfully disastrous relationship. Now I only buy pieces when they have exceptional toning and a price which is tolerable to my bankroll. I think most collectors attempting any of the above sets in MS anything are just going to be disappointed until they earn a six figure income. If you want to collect XF, I think a lot of year sets are possible, but anything else is like not happening. I get the ANR catalogs as a nice gesture from D. Bowers (I interviewed him for my club letter in 1992 when I was 14) for the last two years and I still have not been able to buy one thing out of the catalogues because his stuff is so freaking high end that even common date stuff runs like $200 minimum.

Ironically, now I am putting together sleeper sets because I think that this trend is going to continue for far longer than we anticipate and I think a lot of undervalued or ignored sets will gain momentum because they are simply not collected now and there will be pieces available in the $20-$50 range for phenomenal coins even slabbed. I dunno, I like Lincoln cents anyway, so I am doing those and raw unc Whitman folders. My 8 year old likes it and so do I. And it gives me something to help the younger collectors out by giving them my duplicates.

    Just my thoughts.

    Nick

I collect US coins as part of a world proof set collection( I'm collectimg by type and only sets based on circulation coinage) Over the last few years my US purchases have been limited to yearly state quarter or full proof sets.
