I didn't know PSA....

authenticated this kind of stuff.

It's a salesman sample that they use to go around to the candy stores and try to get them to place a big order by getting excited about the design for the upcoming season. The back of the card has the saleman's name on it - so I guess most of these wound up in the garbage.

If they are going to authenticate this kind of stuff, why not do "proof blankbacks?"

This is the holder they use for the Hires Root Beer cards with tabs.

Is this yours? I'm assuming not, based on the question... Neat piece, I've never seen one of those before.

On a side note, did you ever order your wax from BBCE? Did you get it yet? Mine should be here tomorrow. (I'm excited and just wanted to bring it up. ) image

    Hi Josh
    I wish on the Mantle!

On the cards - I ordered vending boxes - cheap/on sale. I put it in with Amex and it delayed everything till I gave him another card - the order probably went out today. So, maybe this weekend I'll be on a 2000 ct. search for a set and a few winners?

Thanks for sharing, Stone. I wonder if they will grade the 1955 Bowman Salesman Samples. Where did you find that one that you posted here...?
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

    Thanks, Mike.

I have a message in to see if they will grade the 1955 Bowman Salesman Samples. That would be neat!

The problem there may be in the holder....they may not have one...the 59T strip is fitting in a modern issue oversized holder for the Hires cards...I wonder if they have a bigger holder?

Or you may wind up with a bigger "dreaded" baggy!

    Mike:

Aren't the 1955 Bowman's the same size as 1959 Topps? if so - the panels would fit into the same holder, I believe. Or are the 1959 Topps smaller? I apologize - I keep forgetting when the card sizes reverted back to "standard" - perhaps 1957?

    I don't collect 55Bs but they are odd sized in a way - I believe they are 2 1/2 X 3 3/4" where as the pre57T cards are 2 5/8 X 3 3/4".

Now, they may have a holder but I'm pretty sure the one for the 59T won't work.

Maybe Joe Orlando will consider all those wonderful vintage (and modern too!) odd ball material that do not fit in current PSA plastic slabs? I have lots of wonderful "different-sized" items "salted-away" that I'm sure would look great in a PSA holder, create additional interest to collectors, make odd ball items more desireable, create new markets for sellers.

Maybe someone should start a thread on possible oversized items that could merit grading and slabbing by PSA? The ongoing thread could be "passed-on" to Joe Orlando, for possible consideration, for "new sized slabs".

There's "strength in numbers", plus it could only be a "win, win win" for all players: PSA, collectors and for sellers, plus a ton of wonderful vintage material, that is not currently graded, could soon become new PSA material.

If a site was dedicated to different sized cards, not currently graded, I'm sure PSA would listen, no?

edit: P.S. Maybe then, I could get some Pete Rose "talking baseball cards" graded by PSA, and add it to my Master Rose set? LOL! I bet each one of you could come-up with different "odd-sized" items, worthy of PSA grading (i.e., like, 1981 Topps Giant Photo Cards/Team Series! ).
  • I've asked PSA numerous times about housing the 74 Topps puzzles. It would be the best and actually only way to display them. I thought they could even put the proverbial "baggie" in a T3 holder to make sure it doesnt move....

  • Thanks Mike. image

It's taking me too long to put together the 59 set, and now here's one more thing to buy!

As if the set isn't big enough already. image

    really neat item
  • I think the 2008 Heritage sales sheet mentions those being included as box toppers (or some such thing) this year. I had never seen one until this thread.

I wonder if there's an aging ex-salesman out there sitting on a mountain of mint 50's Topps or Bowman.

  • I've seen a number of the hand-cut "sample cards" on eBay (last card on the panel), usually billed as error cards. I enjoy collecting this oddball stuff, and they sure do look nice in PSA holders...

I have purchased some 3 panel proof sheets directly from Topps, would they grade those now?

I sent them *all* of my 1955 Bowman Salesman Sample Strips about a year or two ago, and they were returned, not graded. They said that their holders did not fit them at the time...

Are the 55 Bowmans larger then the 59's that Mike is showing? Also did your 55's have blank backs? Those 2 issues may be the reason the returned them to you.

    Steve

    Good for you.
