Screw downs....

Does anybody here know if there is any such thing as a recessed screw down holder that fits the bigger, early issue Topps Baseball ??? (52', 53', 54', 55', 56')

I really don't remember but I will say that most will advise an individual to say away from screw downs - they can only increase the chance that a card may get damaged IMO.

Or you can contact these guys. They may have what you want.

Screwdowns are a risk and to be honest, a lot of the early topps issues 52-56 were a bit varying in size. If you do find a screwdown that fits, you may find that a lot of your cards won't fit the holder because they've been diamond cut, miscut or are just a bit oversized. I've never owned very many of any of these cards, but the ones I've had I've put in toploaders and had some issues even then.

You can try Ultra, Cardboard Gold and Collector Safe. One of them may make what you are looking for. I'd try a small sampling off the bay if you can find them first and make sure they fit the bill.

Thanks for the link Mike! Ive also heard to stay away from screw downs, but do you think that the recessed holders are as bad as the plain flat ones. I keep some of my valuable ungraded vintage cards in the recessed holders and havent had any issues. The flat ones however, you must be sure not to tighten those down to much. I stay clear from those.

I used a few of the plain flat ones a few years ago when that was all that was available. They destroyed quite a few cards that was kept in them too long. If you have to use a flat one, use a penny sleeve with it.

The recessed ones are great so long as the card is not miscut and fits in the recess properly. As far as protection goes, these holders are just as good as the slabs that come with graded cards.
