  • First it is Swedish, not Norwegian.

My son is helping with the translation and will be finished soon

  • A Google search on Olof's name turns up a whole bunch of hits, in a Scandanavian language, with some references to "Nordisk", which seems more likely to refer to Norway, not Sweden; but the only information I have been able to glean from those hits is that there was apparently a well-known professor of that name, who lived from 1812-1870, the same time span mentioned on the medal.

  • In Scandinavian languages, the letters Ä Ö with two dots above them will always be Swedish and Å could be Norwegian Danish or Swedish

The top of the reverse reads about "The growers harvest their crop in his memory"

On the bottom it is harder the first word is either "Worthy of respect or Considerable" followed by a location

the bottom line is "Saving or economizing Association"

Here is a Swedish link about him

  • The medal is Swedish. It appears to have been issued in 1877 to commemorate the guy on the obverse who was probably the founder of a "household" school as we call it in Scandinavia: a school where young women could learn how to cook, wash, sow and clean while young men could learn different handicrafts.

I can't see all the lettering at the bottom of the reverse clearly, but the text probably says something about who issued the medal. I think the "household school" was located in Oerebro county, Sweden.

Such medals are fairly common in Scandinavia, but this particular one I have not seen before. Usually they are smaller and made of bronze.

  • Here's another one of those household school medals I just came across today. This one was awarded to a guy who taught others how to make woodwork.

  • Olof Gabriel Hedengren (1812-1870 as seen on medal) was a reformer of swedish agriculture. He first made a short career within the military but then made several trips to, among other places, England and Scottland, in order to study the agriculture there. Upon his return he transformed his own holding "Riseberga" into a uptodate modern farm. Hedengrens acchievements mostly concerned cattle and diary products. He also was a member of the swedish parlament for a short period of time and was a rather religious man, building a church/pray-house!? in "Riseberga" where he himself used to preach from every sunday.

The location is Örebro, "Riseberga" isnt far from Örebro, and Olof was also born there. Örebro is located west of Stockholm, in the middle of Sweden. Riseberga is also the location of an old nunn-convent!? from the 1200-century. When driving to Örebro from home I use to stop there as it is half-way on my way. It make a good stop. image

Hope that helped a bit aswell. image

Also including a picture on the pray-house!? and the ruins of where the nunns lived.

The church/pray-house have recently been restored.
