Just saying Howdy.

Howdy! (There I said it) image

I've been lurking around for a while - just bought my gold membership and am trying to prepare my first submission for grading. I'm not really a collector, at least not in the modern sense. I'm just an old f*rt that has always really liked baseball cards since I was about 8 years old. Even now I find it hard to pass up older cards (just bought 3 wax boxes of 1990 vintage at an auction for $2 ea). Anyway, I've been 'storing' my mostly 60's vintage cards for quite a few years now and have finally decided to move some of them. I've got a little extra time on my hands lately and figure I can spend some time to try and do it right. The last time I checked (about 1991), about the only way to sell some was to travel to the "big city" about 3 hours away and sell them to a dealer for .40-.50 cents on the dollar.

So anyway, I've really enjoyed reading the posts here. There's a lot of good information and you guys have a great sense of humor. I'll probably be asking some questions before too long. Hope you'all don't mind a newbie asking dumb questions... image

Hey, nice to see a new face on the forum. Do you collect any paticular years. When you say you bought three boxes of 1990 vintage, from what company?

  • Welcome to the boards ...... there are a lot of old f*rts in here to that do and don't consider themselves collectors. I'm sure there are plenty of lurkers still around and that's fine especially for gaining information, but it's nice to see when they finally communicate via the message boards. They can learn an invaluable amount of info from these guys and we can,as well, from them. Good choice on signing up for the membership. The SMR, that accompanies the membership, will give you a much better idea on what your graded cards will sell for. Especially via Ebay. It's more precise than using just a Beckett or Tuff Stuff. Afew sets that I'm trying to collect are The !961 Topps BB and 1963 Fleer BB. Good Luck Muck !!!

First off - thanks for the welcome.

What I have most of is:
    1964 Topps BB
    1964 Phil FB
    1965 Topps BB
    Some 1962 Topps FB
A lot more of varying years - still going thru it all. Somehow I got a bunch of 1990-91 Topps BB - there doesn't seem to be a lot of goodies there.

The 3 boxes of 90 vintage were also Topps BB. Since that's all I've really ever known, that's all I ever get. One of the reasons I stopped "collecting" was that suddenly there seemed to be so many brands and types and all so confusing... so confusing. image It's tough for some of us old guys to keep up. image

    Welcome Mucky
    Any relation to the pups?

If you have any really cool vintage, don't be shy, we like seeing your scans!

On the questions, ask away! We may not know the answer but we always tell the truth, even why we're lying! image

I hope you enjoy it here.

The first cards to look through for possible grading should be your '62 Topps football. Graded HOF rookies from that set, Jim Brown, and a few others sell for very nice prices, as does just about anything that year in PSA 8 or higher. In the baseball cards, HOF rookies and the biggest stars (Mantle, Koufax, Clemente, etc.) are the best ones to look at for grading.

I recommend using your free gold memebership submissions on superstar cards that you think are worthy of grading - PSA offers specials on grading commons, but basically not on vintage superstars.

If you have questions about what grade a card might get, post a scan or digital picture here (there are threads devoted to explaining how to do that) and ask for opinions. You'll find a bunch of people happy to give their opinion.

    Good luck.
