GAI dropped the ball here.

I realize this particular wax tray has caused some confusion regarding its year but as an owner of a similar tray, I can confidently say this is a 1976, NOT a 1974 as GAI has labeled it (or mislabeled it). While some 1976 packs were placed in 1974 wrappers, 1974 trays were labeled with a 10 cent pack designation, not 15 cent. Plus, you can read the expiration date on this reverse's "coupon" as 1/31/76. I like GAI packs and have bought a few of them but as the only 3rd-party pack authentication service I would have expected more from their battery of "experts" on this particular tray.

Topps tray

I'm editing to take back my point about the 1/31/76 expiration date. This was always the point of contention on this particular tray because why would the expiration date be well before the 1976 baseball season even started? My feeling is that Topps used "old" cardboard backing for the first batch of '76 trays. When the "1976 Series" packs and subsequent trays came out, the coupon had a 9/30/76 expiration date, obviously toward the end of the '76 season. I e-mailed all of this to BBCExchange. I'd hate them to get a neg over this because it's really not their fault. They SHOULD, however, take the auction down and get GAI to change the label.

out of curiosity, how would they get negged on this? Steve obviously thought it was a 74 and gai thought it was a 74 and without opening , which is not going to happen, the buyer has confidence in steve and gai to think it is a 74. If Steve takes another look at hte pack and thinks that it is a 76, I am sure he will take it down and if he thought it was a 76 already , he would not have listed it and would have sent it back to GAI. You don't do the kind of sales that steve does wand get the reputation that he has by trying to rob an extra couple hundred bucks on a mislabled item

That's my point. I wouldn't want his feedback ruined because of a GAI fault (even though, yes, this particular tray has fooled many people regarding its year, including, as we have now seen, the only 3rd party pack grading/authentication service). Steve e-mailed me back today and the auction has since been pulled.

    Got this email from Steve:

    << <i>Hello!
All the trays and racks we have up on ebay right now came in on consignment. If they were ours we would have put them up on our website www.bbcexchange.com But since they came in on consigment I just gave them to one of my employees to put up on ebay. He listed them by assuming GAI had it correct on the label. I have since pulled down the auction as it is a 1976 tray. Thanks! Steve >>

So this was a consignment and it blew by him - heck, crap "blows by me" everyday!

  • Even if GAI graded money, I wouldn't buy a $100 bill for fifty bucks if it were in a GAI holder... well... maybe I would...

Ryan Rutter (Wax From the Past) is the guy who may have likely graded/slabbed this pack. He has posted on these boards as VintageWax or something like that. Next time he posts, please tell him your comment.

Ironically, I bought several of my trays from Ryan.

The assumption appears to be that the grader did this?

How does one know it wasn't a typo or something?

I think those guys know the difference between a 74 and 76 pack.
