NEWP: Augustus quadran 4B.C.

Nice little pickup. Can anyone tell me what a moneyer did. I read some on it but am still a little unsure. C. Naevius Capella is(was) the moneyer on this coin.

Edit to try and add actual pictures. This may take a while.imageimage

A little off kilter, but I got it!

Basic explanation of a moneyer is a private individual (likely from a prominent family, either politically or financially or both) who was selected to be in charge of minting coins for the Roman state, usually for one year. Generally there were three moneyers per year (starting in the Roman Republic and continuing into at least 1st century of the Roman Empire). Whether these people were appointed by govt. officials or elected by the people is uncertain.
