Billy Ripken '89 Fleer FF Card

I just got the 1989 Billy Ripken FF Card from my cousin, who is putting together a master set of these error cards. Apparently there are a ton of these variations, and there is quite a market for Billy Ripken error card collectors. Even though the card is not graded, I must say I am pretty excited after all these years to finally be in posession of this ba$tard card. I was 11 at the time the card came out, and it was known as "the bad card".

Does anyone know which one of the corrected versions of that card is worth the most? I remember there was the scribbled out version, the black box version, the white box version and some were they actually cut out a piece of the card to cut out the bottom of the bat.

The white out version is the toughest and has the highest value. I have every version except the "white out". My favorite is the cut out card. I pulled that card directly from the pack myself. The shop owner could not believe it. I have considered have them all graded, but have yet to do so.

If anybody has a "white-out" version for sale.... I'm buying

I had no idea there were such variations of the Billy Ripken card, I had only known about 4 of them. Between the Ripken, the Marlboro sign on the Johnson (and there are a lot more than 3 variations of that card also, as the Marlboro sign can be seen bright with a red tint, faded with a red tint & faded without a red tint, plus the partial blackout where only the edge of the ad is visible and the total blackout), Fleer really had a field day in 1989 editing cards that had already had print runs. I recall there are a handful of other error cards in that set. One is a Jeff Treadway with a target on it, although, I've never seen this card... anyone know what it looks like?
  • Josh,
I used to have the treadway card. It was a printers registration mark right between his eyes.

the 89 fleer randy johnson had him pictured in front of a Marlboro sign, and later decided to "black" it out.. evidently there are other variations also..

  • I look at the FF card, and the depth perception if you will doesnt look right on the letters. I almost think it was written on the end of the bat post production. I wonder if fleer did this on purpose?

  • Just got a Ripken white-scribble in a wax pack from a box I bought at a show...I can't believe it. Can't wait to see you all at the Toronto card expo next weekend...

In defense of him (my good friend who has same mission as I) We have uncovered a wealth of information with hopes to finally figure out what was really done with/to this card. We have families and good jobs. We are doing this not out of greed or for fame but as a hobby and really enjoy what we do. We have helped many others and have renewed interest for many people who have gone the path of "pack gambling". Maybe you need to get a life as you are unable to see the positive in what we do and feel the need to put others down for no apparent reason. We are proud of our collection. -Donovan

  • Might actually be fun to rip a rack case of this! image
  • Yeah I have opened a few rack cases. But look for resealed cases. The cello is easy as the factory used clear tape. The rack/wax used Fleer tape but some will break seal and re-tape with clear tape. If you buy individual boxes of cello/rack there are "codes" as Fleer printed cards in sequence. I heard also in wax the Ripken was in a certain place in box. 1 cello case and 4 rack cases that were legit sealed had no Bill Ripkens at all. I assume this when they pulled card and before a correction was made. I hav egotten a case with saw cut and BBox in same case. I assume this is because they printed cards at Fleer plant and outsourced from a print shop in Colorado and mixed product in cases. Happy Hunting-Donovan
