Temporary *Official* SCD Feedback thread

Hi guys
I would just like to keep this around for a while as you get your copies of SCD.

Please feel free to comment here about what you liked and didn't like about the pub.

Keep in mind, I don't work for Krause or anything - this is just genuine curiosity from someone who has been a subscriber for almost 15 yrs.

Since Ebay rules supreme - the pub is not important for that venue - but it still serves a purpose of "linking" all the pieces together for you and provide you with really interesting articles that enrich the hobby experience.

Last, I think for those that collect strictly for investment/buying and selling - the pub has little merit. But, one can still be objective about the relative quality of the articles, information dissemination and overall layout for ease of reading and enjoyment.

This publication IMO is the cornerstone of the sports collecting community and I would hate to see it go the way of the dinosaur.

Thanx

SCD in my opinion is more like a trade magazine, a couple of good articles and the rest is just advertisements (too many in my opinion). I like a good article to read, maybe they could highlight a certain set once a month or maybe do something on a current release? It just seems that after I read the articles, which takes 15 minutes, I am done with the magazine.

Over the years they have covered every set on the planet and do put in prices of stuff and supplements.
You will see articles in the future on sets - in fact, you will see stuff that you never knew existed unless you are an 19th to early 20th century buff.

As it goes for ads - without them - there's no budget to produce it if you know what I mean.

They have a page dedicated to recent releases but not as much since Tuff Stuff covers it in detail and they own that also.

    thanx for the input

I would rather read an auction catalog than SCD

Being that the pub is predominantly ads, I wonder if they would consider going to a free subscription model. What they'd lose in sub revenue, they might gain back and more due to the ability to charge higher ad rates with increased circulation.

SCD borders heavily on being a catalog, anyway, and many catalogs are given away for free. Throw in the great articles like they have, and this is one "catalog" that I have to imagine that virtually EVERY collector would sign up for--assuming it was free.

When a catalog comes out free - believe me, we're paying for it.

Auctions charge more and more every year both to the buyer and seller. If there wasn't an adequate ROI, they wouldn't send them out in mass.

SCD, from week to week does not have the potential revenue that Lelands, Mastronet etc. can generate with their catalog.

Plus, staff have to edit, write and produce the publication - ya gotta have $ from somewhere?

I signed up for the SCD trial subscription offer and like the content of the magazine even though it is definitely a lot thinner than what it used to be the last time I had a subscription 5+ years ago. I am not sure if I'll renew after my trial subscription is up as it take so long for the issue to arrive in the mail. They must mail it via 3rd class media mail because all the auction catalogs that they include are always over by a couple of weeks by the time my issue arrives. I don't know why Time, Fortune, and other weekly magazines, can arrive with a couple of days yet SCD takes weeks. If they could arrive in a more timely manner, i'd be more likely to subscribe.

I want to get the inside on the following:

1-The first and last year Topps issued cards in verifiable orders in packs (ie, you get a rack pack see a certain player and know what players are next)
2-Year by Year account of the various orders Topps cards were distributeded in wax, cello, and rack packs.
3-How to spot bunk versus valid/fresh unopened material (year by year)

Some of this may be in bbckid's book, but i have never read it before.

Part of me wants only me to know about ordering in packs, but other parts of me dont. The part of me that doesn't is for people buying 80's Topps football and baseball packs/boxes/cases looking for $$$$ card of given set. Think of all peeps that have purchased entire cases of stuff and never gotten $$$$ card b/c seller had already pulled packs out and replaced them w/ packs that didn't contain $$$$ cards.

  • It was a nice surprise to see the SCD in the mail for the first time in almost a decade. The nostalgic feel of seeing the SCD in the mail was probably the best part. The articles are a lot more informative now, but the best part of reading a SCD back in the old days was to find deals. I don't think think I even paid attention to anything advertised, other than the auction catalog which made for some good bathroom reading. image
