Need some help from Klip experts... (HUGE PICS)
![coinpictures](https://us.v-cdn.net/6027503/uploads/authoricons/PRUSSIA_3MP_1910A1.gif)
The 2 Klippes I won on Ebay arrived. There's good news and bad news.
Good news: They look better than the photography in the auction.
Bad news: When you look under a loupe, the details are "mushy" and the edges don't look right. Also there are small areas (and one long section of the 1/9 Thaler) that appear to be "flaking off".
Of course I'm not an expert when it comes to klippes, so I don't know if it's simply the crudeness of 17th-century manufacture. I'm wondering if these might be cast counterfeits or something similar.
Any pointers would be helpful.

Let's see--I believe the large crack in one is simply a cracked flan (planchet), which isn't all too uncommon for medieval coins. This coin has wonderful old patina and luster. The hole in the other one appears to have been made by cutting it out with a knife, pretty interesting if you ask me. This coin displays some minor hairlining, but overall has a wonderful original look complete with an old patina, and proof-like surfaces on the struck part.
"Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you." -Luke 11:9
"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might." -Deut. 6:4-5
"For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; He will save us." -Isaiah 33:22
Most certainly fascinating coins!
<< <i>My god... what kind of camera you got there coinpictures? 8megapixels?
Most certainly fascinating coins!
7.1 Megapixels, actually.
Even the biggest closeup of the crack is not taken at the camera's highest resolution.
With the higher resolution of the current crop of cameras and "Super Macro" modes, we are getting closer to being able to take shots that historically required a microscope with camera attachment. We're not there quite yet, but it's getting darned close.
Of the three digital cameras I've owned, I like this one the best by far. If anyone's curious, the camera is an Olympus C-7070. It has a 4x ultrawide-angle zoom lens, which is very nice for normal photography. Cost: $337 from Dell.

That DOES explain a lot of things there. Hehehe
<< <i>I have only owned one Klippe, but based on that limited experience I think both of those are o.k. >>
Same here- and the one that Dead King owned he got from me. It was my only klippe.
I do think those are kosher, and like them.
I need a holey like that on the Holey Coin Vest.

You want to buy it back? It'll be on ebay before too long. I'll even put a whole in it just for you!

Would the TPGs bodybag or net grade these either because of the holes or the planchet crack?

<< <i>Next question:
Would the TPGs bodybag or net grade these either because of the holes or the planchet crack? >>
Yes, these would be BBed for the holes. As for the planchets, that can go either way depending on severity: small flaws do not affect the grading, medium sized flaws get BBed and big flaws get slabbed as mint errors.
Since they are holed at the top, were they used for jewelry?

Yup, many were used for jewelery. In a semi related note, Goldberg is selling a collection of klippes in their next auction.

So you ended up with that one, eh, Jester? What was it, Nuremberg? Like so many Darkside pieces, it made the rounds, I guess. There are a lot of pieces with three or more Darksiders in the pedigree!
And, no- don't put a hole in it... I would rather you left it whole.
One day I shall have a holey one like those CP posted.
