Huge variation in price for 1949-D Franklin. Justified?

I know that the 1949-D Franklin is considered a key to the series in MS65 and MS66, due to the fact that they are typically heavily bagmarked. 1949 is my birth year, and since the age of 18, I've searched for an attractive '49-D without much success. This one appeared on TT earlier this week, but it sold for nearly twice what some of the others have in recent months. I looked at the other recent sales, and they all had what I would consider not very attractive mint set toning. This one is lightly toned, has better than average luster for the date, and seems to have minimal marks, but is it worth that kind of premium? What do you Franklin experts think?

  • Jim,
1000$ is the going price for an attractive '49-D...........there is big demand for the date, and SO many are just blah ; even in PCGS 65 holders.
You can buy fistfulls of them between 400-600 dolllars, but most collectors are looking for a "neat" one .

If i may blow my own horn , I recently bought the most colorfull, attractive PCGS 65 FBL 1949-D
I believe that exists !! Over the decades , I have seen well over 100 pieces so graded , even a few MS-66's .............
but NONE came close to this genuine rainbow . I shelled out 1900.00 $ in a heartbeat ; I slept with it under my pillow for days !!
I believe it has no rival , and if someone believes they got a prettier one ; then by all means - BRING IT ON

Finding a really nice 49D is challenging...nearly all the 65s I've seen were overgraded...if you find a real 65, scoop it up and expect to pay a premium.

  • James ,
I really don't think a prettier one exists !! Thanks a million image
  • I was born in that year too--a fbl has been on my list for a looooong time in 66 or 67(PCGS)--they're usually horrible, any nice one brings top dollar. But there aren't any nice one's, at least less than $1900.

  • I dunno about that .........., a couple months back i sold a superb piece on ebay @ 625$ ; i had paid a grand for it a couple years back . I thought fellers like yourself would have bid it up to near what i paid. I should have not sold it- at least not so cheep !
Years ago i put up on ebay some of the most powerfull franklins ever there was , rainbow 52-D ,54-D and a 49-S i eventualy sold for 6000$ . Ebay bidders were ignorant of what they saw and bid piddly amounts ...it was pityfull .
I deduced the typical ebayer was unaware of a moster coin when they saw one .
There are more savy buyers there now however , and competition is fierce for the rainbow stuff .
But that 49-D had to be relisted before it sold @625 , so maybe the average feller is still as ignorant as ever when it comes to spotting the real thing .
  • 49-D as supercar and others have said, is a tough date, Usually highly abraded, with average luster at best.
There are quite a few in 65 holders that do not seem to really stand for the grade.

I'd really like to see that Rainbow 49-D supercar, that's a rare bird. Please?image

Here my 65fbl, it's a little better than average. It's really a place holder, but I don't know that I'll ever find a truly attractive piece that matches the rest of my set, in quality. If I did find one, I'd gladly pay 900.00

No, I havent been to a coin show in many years. As far as seeing the 49-D, I still want to. I've mitigated all the risk factors and have determined that not seeing it would be a far worse fate.image

    Supercarcoins,
you need to post your 49D somehow...IMHO the two best color 49D (PCGS 65s obviously old holders) in existence went to Andy at Victorian Rare Coins in 1989...green/red Christmas trees...I'd love to see how your's matches up....Greattoning will back up this post.image

The 49D I sold Andy looked like it came out of the same mint set as my icon coin...yeh, it really did!!!

  • Rainbow, maybe this incredible looking 49-d Washer was from the same mint set?

  • Rainbowroosie,

I was buying coins from Andy in '89 and thru the 90's ; he never offered me any rainbow 49-D's............. i did buy two nice ones from him , they were nice but not spectacular.
If his coin(s) look like your icon dime , then it's no contest ........game over image

I concur with Rainbowroosie and the two prettiest 49d's that I have seen (I owned both at one time) were sold in 1989.

I bought a Xmas tree 49-D from Andy years ago, maybe it's the coin you're talking about. I'll take a pic of it shortly. It's in a PCGS66 holder now.

And to reply to Jim's original post, I like the pic of that coin. For a 49-D, it looks very clean and lustrous. 49-Ds usually are fairly dull luster, and have negative toning. Just to find one with nice color is hard to do. To find one with nice luster is hard. To find one with both is like hen's teeth. Definately worth a premium to pay up for a really nice one.

Here's a pic of the 49-D I mentioned. Had a heck of a time with the pic, little rusty on the pic skills, best I can do for now.

Here's another real interesting 49-D toner.

I think there are probably less than 10 49-Ds in high grade with real nice toning. Even tougher to find is the 50-D. In 25 years of looking, I have yet to find a real gorgeous toner

This is nice, but there are at least two 49Ds out there "FAR" better toned than this coin. Also, there is a 50D that is really cool toned. I bought it raw from Steve Leber in 1989 for $1200...slabbed 65 at NGC, first one, then later 66 by John Wooten...cool coin.image

    1) if you can find a fully prooflike and solid ms65 fbl 1949-d frnaklin with incredible color and eye appeal throw away the sheets!! this coin would be top of the range

    2) bottom of the range would be the ugly white washed out non fbl average to below average eye appeal

justified?? absolutely so!! if you buy number one!!!!
  • ..............Alrighty then ; the game continues !!! image

    Rainbowroosie,
I believe I'm familiar with that 50D in person. And yes, it is probably the nicest High Grade example I've ever seen.

    Ronyahski,
that is a nice 49D. Rarely ever see them with that type of color. Thanks for sharing!
