1965 Topps Joe Namath - Pic Added

I have an opportunity to buy/trade for 2 of these this weekend. They are both about even as far as condition goes. One has a bit of a centering issue (70/30 LR) while the other has a "shotgun shot" (yellow ring) on the surface. The corners are NM or better on both, TB centering is very good on both. My guess is they are both slam dunk 6's, maybe even 7's depending on how the print defect is treated.

9 times out of 10, I will opt for the card with better centering and forgo some other defects, however I think the ring on the other one makes it a bit less desirable. The price is fantastic on both, and even if they both got SMR for Ex5 I'd be doing ok with them. I need one for my sets...

So two questions...
1. What are your experiences with 65 Topps as I've never had one graded...and 2nd would you rather have the slightly more OC version without the yellow ring or the more centered version? I am not able to get scans of either of them to display it, but the yellow ring is on the left side of the card in the darker area and is probablly 1/8" in diameter. It is a ring and not a full "filled-in" circle. (what I call shotgun shots)

  • sounds like you are leaning toward the OC card already. I think OC is still probably better, as long as you don't care about the OC qualifier on your grade. I haven't much experience with this set, except for passing up two near sets, both missing the Namath, and both times the seller wanted $600 to $800 for the near set/lot. The price was too high for the condition, so I passed. Anyways, I vote for the OC card.

it shouldn't actually get an OC qualifier as 70/30 to 75/25 front centering is still inline for a 7, and 80/20 for a 6. It's more the eye appeal issue I'm debating. I don't have much experience with the 65's to know if these print defects are common or not. I have a Biletnikoff rc that has them all over, only smaller and it's in an unqualified 7 holder. Maybe I'll just buy them both and see how they grade...gonna set me back a few bucks...but if I can get them off to PSA and get them turned around quick I can sell one and keep one and be in good shape still. I wish I just had $1500 sitting around just for times like these. image

Thanks for the response...and yes, I think I am leaning more towards the "oc" one. Have to give them a good look again in the morning.
  • be sure to angle the cards in some good light. It's a tough set for corners, because of the Tallboy. I have only shuffled through maybe 400 of the cards, so I don't recall anything about print defects. The yellow areas are pretty common on some other color background topps sets though.

Well, here's the one I bought.

There is a slight "Stain" on the left side in the yellow, which is visible in the scan and the left corner about an inch up has a bit of a "rolled" edge. not creased or wrinkled. Got it for about $430 so I'm happy.

Edited to put in larger front scan

  • It's a 6, a 7 is a bit of stretch. You did well. This the one with the "ring"(butthole) right? I see the ring on this card but it will not affect the grade. If the card was a borderline 9 it would though. I am not trying to say I am an expert this is just MHO, but I feel pretty confident about it. Great pick up. Does he want the same price for the other card? Way to go!

Actually no, this isn't the "butthole" one. lol

That one has a ring on the black part, near the name. I was thinking it was this one. He used to want the same price for both ($650) but now he has the other at $1200 so I politely told him no thanks. This one has better corners but has the stain. (Which I had forgotten about) but for the price, I thought it was right. I'm hoping for a 5, if it's a 6, then all the better. I've never been a huge Namath fan, but I love this card. Plus it applies heavily to 6 of my sets, so all the better. image

I'm sending it off tomorrow morning, should have the grade before the end of the week.

Yea, I've never really cared for the way Joe looks on the card either. The story is that the photographer pulled Joe out of a hospital bed, and took the picture in the hospital corridor. That probably explains the emaciated lookimage

steve-interesting to know. I had never heard that before.
  • that's a pretty clean looking card for 65 tallboys! Good work. It's not that O/C either.
