Home PCGS Set Registry Forum

We're down to fewer than 3 new threads per day.

Whatever the problem the simple fact is that this forum
is still in decline.

Yes. We've had a few good threads in the last couple days.

There are now 53 threads in the last twenty days. Two will drop off in fifteen minutes.

This thread may not count for much but it is one of them. image

Only a few months ago we were averaging nearly 20 new threads per day
and the average thread lenght was higher.

"Whether the problem is the lack of advertising on this forum, or the presence of trolls who attack and provoke even with their signature lines the simple fact is that this forum
is still in decline. Yes. We've had a few good threads in the last couple days, but so many of these get dirtied by those who have an agenda."

CK: Clearly, the lack of advertising has hurt participation in this particular forum IMHO, which, among other things, was established in the first place for that very purpose. But, DH has spoken on this, so nothing more to say about that. I am not sure about the "presence of trolls who attack..." Of course, both "trolls" and "reasonable men who beg to differ" have challenged moderns for years here and, I for one, have always enjoyed debating a "reasonable man" about moderns as you know (as you have). On the other hand, I believe a very large % of this forum's members are now content to simply sit on the sidelines and not actively participate, perhaps, in part, because they enjoy their personal collecting habits and are not interested in being "put down" publicly for what they collect, which, appears to happen with some regularity. So, you do have a point there.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see how it all plays out.

    Sam,
I've been on this forum since 2001 and I have NEVER seen what you may call "a lot" of daily postings here. The main coin forum is where most members post. I think of the Registry forum as a place for more specific comments and discussion about registry coins. I like the fact that there are limited postings here so that I can really check them all out for my interest in reading and / or replying. I find that in the coin forum I tend to just scan the subjects and only view those that really seem interesting. I probably miss some because I don't usually look past the first page of 30 threads. Debating is fun and a great excuse to talk about the coins I love. But that is not what
at least one of the bashers is doing. He will neither debate nor even show any indication
that he has even read the answers to his rantings. When carefully and methodically
shown why you disagree with him, he merely disappears and then comes back in another
thread with the same rant. This does not constitute debate, it is an attempt to stifle any-
one who doesn't agree with him. It is not the action of a reasonable man and it is damag-
ing this forum more than any other.

It's not the quantity of posting I miss. Yes, back in the days that we got twenty posts per day
a lot of the posts were low quality or bust B/S/T posts. A few of these B/S/T posts turned into
great threads in their own right but there were few I even opened. But we'd have dozens of
people who cruised this forum regularly and posted. This used to be the second site on the net
(right after the coin forum) that I'd check each day and then I'd check back a few times each day.
Now, I'll look at it in the morning after checking ten or fifteen other sites and then might forget
to come back all day. We used to get a cople good threads per day and now we're lucky to get
them in a week. And then there will often be someone along to wreck or derail them.

It's the quality that I miss. Though a little more action would be nice, too.

  • If people want to see interesting posts here then this place has to be just that .... interesting.

The term "provocative" doesn't necessarily mean "picking a fight". For me it's a way of "provoking" an answer or of "seeing" somebody else's point of view.

Are there many "provocative posts in this forum?

    Not lately.

Another aspect to consider (by reading between the lines) is that you just might also get the impression that we are all being monitored. Is this monitoring good for us? Each one us must decide for his or her self.

Its like the closed circuit telecameras that seem to be everywhere. Does anybody ever wave at them or stick out their tongue at them?

A guy named George Orwell (once upon a time) wrote a few words about that. One of the many things he suggested was that the lack (or perceived lack) of freedom of expression tends to stunt the growth of creativeness. If you sense that expressing yourself "freely" can be "bad", you more than likely won't express yourself at all.

A possible explanation for the lack of posts is that people that are starting a new registry set, or are new to the forum, lurk around for a while before posting. Ironically the fresh sets are the ones that have the most amount of activity.

However, the more seasoned people here and the ones that have nearly complete (more than 2/3) sets don't have as much activity because it is either more difficult to find some of the remaining coins for their sets, or it is extremely price prohibitive.

If the next coin you need for your set is $5k+, and you don't have it, you're probably not going to look for it or really have all that much to discuss about your Registry Set. Perhaps this is somewhat of a jaded view but it's not one that can be easily dismissable.

The common man -- me for instance -- is looking for ways to build his registry set in a way that doesn't put him in to bankruptcy. A person offering me a $4,600 coin for $9,250 doesn't help me. So I look for ways to make that coin myself, maybe even in a lower grade. Since the "what's the latest/greatest", and "how-to" type information gets posted to the US Coin Forum, the Registry Set forum simply doesn't get much traction.

After all, out of the 10's and 100's of thousands of people that collect coins, some of which are PCGS Forum Members, how many individuals (not sets) actually have Registry Sets? Also, based on the posts here, and recent/upcoming auctions, it seems as though more people are getting out of their Registry Sets (e.g. selling them off) in this day and age as opposed to building them.

My view is tha the Registry Set forum doesn't need to go away, but I doubt it will ever have a significant # of posts every day.
