OK, so I would like to play with some cards that are affordable - I was looking and saw 1983 vending for $50 per. I was thinking 4 boxes and see if I can complete a set. I never did the 83 set.

What would you guys do if you were going to spend about 200 bucks?

Second, what if you had a few grand....what would you buy? I don't have a few grand - just dreamin!

image

I may also buy one box of wax instead of 4 vending and get only 2.

I would buy a case of 1978 Topps w/o a doubt. The wax packs I have purchased from BBCE have all been really nice condition.

I would also invest in 1982 Topps Rack Box for $200.

Well, I had $250 to spend and just for the helluvit, this is what I purchased from Steve at BBCE last night.

    1 x 1984 Fleer Baseball Unopened Cello Box $75.00
    1 x 1983 Topps Baseball Unopened Vending Box $50.00
    1 x 1984 Topps Baseball Unopened Vending Box $20.00
    1 x 1987 Donruss Baseball Unopened Wax Box $32.00
    1 x 1981 Topps Baseball Unopened Cello Box $75.00

If this goes well, I'll try a some wax boxes of 92 Stadium Club football, 1982, 1983, 1985 Topps Football. And that 78 and 79 Cello boxes are looking inviting as well. I was hoping there would be 84 Donruss wax on the site, but no luck. So I guess 85 Donruss will be on my list now.

The prices all seemed good for what I was buying. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Sounds great. I have done a few boxes of 78T years ago...as Softparade will vouch, it's great!

    Keith
I think you bought some interesting stuff!
I've also done a lot of that stuff and that's why the 83T - you have 3 good RC cards to grab also!

  • If I had a few grand, I'd snap up that '60 Leaf box for $4,500. That's about as cheap as you'll ever get for a vintage box (les than $200 a pack).

Or a '75 Topps mini box for $1,450.

For $200, '83-'85 Topps vending looks pretty good. Two boxes of '83's, two '84's, and one '85 box.

    Mike,

you know what I would AND HAVE done with a few grand image. Not that I have that kind of money to whiz around but sometimes you just have to say WTF !!!

Also, I will someday like to do an 84 Donruss raw set. Those wax boxes are relatively cheap....

I wouldn't open it, I'd just store it away. In 5 years, it'd be pretty cool to have a mint 50 year old wax box.

  • Three '85 Topps rack case. $600, I believe.

Also fun to play with the 84's because they're relatively inexpensive.

Also buy the '72 OPC wax packs from BBCkid. Lots of stains, however.

I'm going to try one more time!

I purchased 4 different misc. '70s OPC baseball wax boxes in the past year. The OPC cards from ALL (4) boxes displayed the typical off-centering. I was dissapointed "in my pulls", to say the least!

Those purchases led me to begin to accumulate and "salt away" some vintage '70s OPCs in PSA 9 and 10 this year, as I begun to realize not only were 70s OPC baseball printed in limited quantities, compared to Topps baseball , but it now seems clearer that a greater percentage of '70s cards, were printed off-center, mis-cut, or just not the same "quality control standards" that was afforded to the printing processes of the '70s Topps versions.

After saying all this, I just bought a box of '78 OPC baseball wax for $250.00, from BBCE.

Just maybe, the fifth time will be the charm?

1978 OPC has only 242 cards in the set, while 1978 Topps has a whopping 726 different cards. here are some highlighted "money cards" 1978 OPCs list in SMR:

    6 Strikeout Leaders (Ryan, Neikro)
    29 Robin Yount (HOF)
    50 Johnny Bench (HOF)
    78 Dave Winfield (HOF)
    100 Pete Rose
    105 Nolan Ryan (HOF)
    110 Reggie Jackson (HOF)
    120 Tom Seaver (HOF)
    137 Carl Yastrzemski (HOF)
    154 Eddie Murray (R) (HOF)
    170 Steve Carlton (HOF)
    180 Andre Dawson
    215 George Brett (HOF)
    225 Mike Schmidt (HOF)
    240 Pete Rose Record Breaker
241 Nolan Ryan Record Breaker (HOF)
242 Reggie Jackson Record Breaker (HOF)

Maybe the OPC printers had a good day and a great "print run"? LOL!

    rbd

edit: plus a bunch others, not listed in SMR like: Carlton Fisk, Phil Niekro, Rollie Fingers, Rod Carew, Lou Brock, Willie McCovey, Brooks Robinson, Dave Winfield, and more! I'll keep u-all posted!

'78 OPC box was only $250? That seems like a good buy...some great cards in that set.

Dang, if I wasn't trying to get my Namath rookie this weekend I'd have to drop another few hundred bucks on that site. I better start saving. image

I'm not sure about '78 Topps wax, but I did see a cello box of '78s selling for $600 at BBCE (think there are 24 cello packs to a box?). I'm guessing that a wax box would be a hundred or so less than a cello box?

78 topps seems to be loaded with nice cards! good luck to you, if you buy! image

Every box I have ordered has arrived next day. I live in Chicago but its good to know he ships out the day of the order. I am REALLY starting to itch for some unopened material. Maybe the 78 OPC box and just hope I get a grader that has actually seen OPC cards before. I'll beat DBH to it, yeah I know they are all trained and certified but whoever graded my 77 OPC's was really hard on them.

Does anyone know if Mark Murphy (BBCKid) is still around? Even before the recent site problems, his site never had anything new on it, and he seemed to be flying under the radar with his advertising and marketing. I hope he is still trying to make a go of it, because there aren't many trustworthy unopened sellers out there, and he is one of them.

I will rob. I bought two "Nrmt-Mt" sets and only pulled about 20-25 cards worthy of my registry set. Was contemplating another set but figured this was a better option. Better chance at the stars in nrmt-mt. Curious as to the ratio of miscuts straight from the box also. About 60%-70% were miscut in the sets.

Typical miscuts cards 1,2 & 3 with the copyright line completely on top on card 3.
