Question for Knuckles & the other Hockey Guys

I'm nearing the completion of my 55 Topps Baseball set and I think I want to start a vintage hockey set. I was wondering if you could offer up some suggestions on nice looking sets that aren't all that expensive. I spent a lot of coin on the baseball set and want to take it easy for awhile. Something in the 3 grand or so range. Thanks.

might want to take a look at the 1970 Dad's Cookies set. Plenty of HOF'S and only a 144 card set. Lots of low pop's right now. This stuff only started to hit ebay about two months ago. An EX/MT set just sold on ebay for around $120 this past weekend.

Thanks for the suggestion Carew. I was thinking (or hoping) for more of a Topps or a Parkie.

I would go for the 1954 Topps Hockey. You can do it for $3000 grand if you are flexible on the grades. I would complete this set raw since the cards are almost like art.

Great suggestion. That's the one I had in the back of my mind. I love that set!

Yaaa, there will be more hockey in Mikes 'Mail Call' thread. image

'54 Topps hockey is by far the most attractive hockey set ever made in my mind. If I ever go after a set that will be it.

'67 Topps (quite easy to find in high grade) and '64 Topps Tall Boys are also nice.

Whatever set you choose to do I recommend dealing with Dave from dmdclassics.com. Good guy.

I agree with Knuckles' choices. Those sets will give you the most stars for the money. For the record, I also like 1957 and 1958 Topps though there may be less of those graded.

What about 63-64 Parkhurst, im my opion the best looking hockey set ever made.
  • Hi Scott.

I am nearing completion of the 62-63 Parkhurst set in PSA 8+ needing just 4 commons and will come in close to the budget that you have suggested. Using the Feb/05 SMR, the cards individually have an SMR value of $3815.
I have aquired all cards from Ebay and dealer purchases.

It is a 56 card set including the checklist and ZIP game card. It features 19 HOF'rs. 3 players have 2 cards in the set. These are Howe, Mahovlich and Geoffrion.

The 63-64 Parkhurst which as mentioned is a terrific set with great eye appeal, however it has a lot of players with 2 cards in the set. When originally deciding between the 2 sets, this was the reason I decided on the 62 set. I wanted to have a vintage set in PSA 8 and did not feel the need to have player duplication in a large number. This free'd up funds to dabble in other area's of the hobby. The 63 set has 99 cards and you would be hard pressed to complete this for the budget you have suggested. One thing to remember is that both of these sets only contain players from the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens and Detroit Red Wings.
If it is important for you to have a set with all 6 original 6 teams included perhaps the 65-66 Topps set would be a good choice. At 128 cards it has 20 + HOF's. The 64 - 65 Tallboy set is a beautiful set also containing all of the original 6 teams. However, if your budget is in the $3000 range you would be collecting a mid-grade set.

Good luck with whatever you decide to go with.

How about a nice start....from the vintage sportscard trading board...

    Hey Hockey Fans and Collectors:
I've decided to concentrate my efforts into completing a few other sets and some other collecting wants so I am going to sell my 1957 Topps Hockey Set as a result. The set is at 50% complete, and is made up of all PSA 7 cards. All cards are NQ.

Scans are of course available. I plan on posting this to ebay in the not too distant future if it doesn't sell to one of my fellow board members.

Here is the link to the set: Jerster's Fab 57's

I'd like to sell in its entirety, but will consider breaking it up if needed.

This would be a great way to get your feet wet in an early hockey set without a lot of money.

You can pm me here with any questions, or I can be reached at jwickens@twmi.rr.com as well.

    Offer price is $1,115.00.

    Thanks for looking.

    Scott:

Two possibilities would be '61-62 Topps or '65-66 Topps.

The '61 set contains only 66 cards and though it is short on big rookies it does have the rookies of HOFers Jean Ratelle and Rod Gilbert. Plus I also think it is a very nice looking set.

My first choice, however, would be the '65 set. This one seems to get a bit overshadowed by the '66 set and Orr's rookie card, but it contains rookies of HOFers Phil Esposito, Yvan Cournoyer, Eddie Giacomin & Gerry Cheevers, plus guys like Ron Ellis, Dennis Hull, Paul Henderson & Ken Hodge. A 128 card set that is very undervalued set in my opinion.

    Good luck. Eyebone

I'm no hockey buff, but I've always liked the looks of 72-73 Topps Hockey Cards (60s parkies & topps are all pretty sweet!)

'72 Topps Syl Apps (A cool card like this bid at $4.95, with just two hours to go! Do it Scott! ...and SMR $20 for singles!)

edit: I'm sure you could put together a very beautiful high end '72-'73 Topps Hockey set in PSA 7, 8, 9 for some very reasonable bucks!
  • Honestly I'd go with Jerster's 57 set.

50% of a 1950's set in NM condition for $1,100.00.

If that thing is still around next week I'll buy it!
