Am I Alone?

Football fans, this is not meant to offend you in any way. I understand people liking football, even though it's not my favorite. What irritates me is the coverage it gets. I understand that football is probably the most popular sport, but when it's wall to wall football on ESPN and ESPN radio right in the middle of pennant races, it just gets to me (Especially Colin Cowherd). I think that he thinks that football is the only sport that exists. Maybe I'm just imagining things, but I just get sick and tired of hearing about everytime T.O. goes to the bathroom. And when baseball IS talked about, it's all Yankees and Red Sox.

Football fans, don't bombard me. I'm just wondering if anybody thinks the same way.

funny, did a cardinal fan say pennant race? what pennant race..Cards and the White Sox are 40 games ahead in their weak
divisions...the NL West will put a team in the playoff far inferior to any of the other playoff teams, and everyday someone gets
busted for roids. Can you blame people for being excited about football?

  • I just think that baseball gets "boring" this time of the year unless your team is in a tight race. Yankees Red Sox is usually a close race. Although the Angels A's (boo M's for choking today 5 in the 9th) is a closer race.

Football is a much shorter season so all that excitement is compacted into a much smaller time period.

As for all the off-the-field crap like Owens, all I hear is that people get sick and tired of it, but if that was the case, they would stop covering the story. I switched the stations everytime I heard it brought up so I did my part lol...

<< <i>(Especially Colin Cowherd). I think that he thinks that football is the only sport that exists. >>

I listen to him occasionally and he has always been adamant that since football is the most popular sport, he always covers it more than any other sport, even during the offseason.

Football draws the most fans, even the most casual fans, so it's going to grab more advertising dollars if they talk about it more.

  • are you nuts!? all we ever hear about is baseball this and baseball that...
it's a boring sport on top of all that!
The sport that gets the least ammount of coverage would have to be basketball...

Kind of like you picking the Orioles for the wild card?

I am not disagreeing with any of you (except maybe the fact that baseball is boring, and I can even see how it COULD BE to SOME people). Football is the most popular sport, and I have heard Colin say that many times. It's just a personal thing with me, and I was wondering if anybody felt the same way. Like I said, I understand the football coverage, but I still don't have to like it.

You gotta remember also that college football gets in the mix now also. College football has been the most popular college sport for sports fans for a very, very long time - long before the NFL overcame MLB as the most popular professional sport. As much as I love the Eagles, Penn State Football will always be #1 for me, while I don't even know what goes on with Penn State baseball. So you have not only a country full of NFL fans but a country full of college football fans as well this time of the year. Whereby, Brian is right that unless your favorite baseball team is in the pennant race, it is for most baseball fans a little boring this time of year. Baseball will again get plenty of coverage and added interest once the playoffs start and especially of course for the World Series.
  • frankhardy you are not alone....when i am at work listening to sports talk radio(we have 2 stations in chicago) i switch back and forth for baseball talk. and who really cares about T.O. what a waste of time talking about that dope!

  • it probably helps (you being a cards fan and) i'm a white sox fan.image
  • I too agree - I am in Atlanta and all the sports talk shows talk about who is the latest recruit at University of Georgia. The talk show host is an ex UGA quarterback. Give it rest, I don't need to hear about who is the latest Georgia player to pass gass.

Braves are having an amazing season with the most playing time of any major league team for rookies and they are mentioned breifly every now and then between interviews with the UGA secondary coach.

Don't get me wrong I like football, but I don't need it shoved down my throat 24 hours a day on the sports networks. I will wait till the World Series is over before paying much attention to football even if the Braves are not in it.

Well, there's three of us now!

    Shane

  • Make that four of us. Football is much more popular and attracts more ratings, so I understand why it is constantly on, but it doesn't mean that it doesn't tick me off.

From the 100,000 hour coverage of the draft to the constant updates during the preseason, it gets too much attention. It was best said back in 2003 in Chicago when the Cubs were in a pennant race (something you say about once every 10 years), and baseball talk on the radio has to be switched to football talk. A caller simply stated on this Sunday that "It is a sad, sad day when the Cubs are likely to win their division, the Sox can make a run at their division, and you have to talk about a Bears team that hasn't won anything or done anything yet as the season hasn't started."

    I will never forget that.

You aren't alone, Frank. Mike and Mike this morning did actually talk about Carpenter and Pujols for about 5 minutes. Make that 3 minutes.

But, the Cardinals played a NY team, so maybe that's why the coverage. image

    denwd1,

I have Fox Sports Midwest, so I get to catch the Cardinals everynight. I do wish I had a pizza though? We live about 25 minutes from the nearest pizza place. That Domino's angus steak pizza looks good!!!

    Peetie,

I missed Mike and Mike this morning. I usually catch them on the way to work. I can't believe they talked about baseball for three minutes, much less, the Cardinals!! Mike and Mike at least has Tim Kurkjian, Peter Gammons, and Steve Phillips on their show on a regular basis. Dan Patrick does a fair share of baseball. But Colin Cowherd is nothing but college football and the NFL. I hardly listen to him for that reason.

Crud!! Hector Luna just threw it away to make it 2-1, Mets.

By the way, that makes five of us!! image

    Shane

  • Well you must also understand that baseball kind of gets it's own open time for about 4-5 months while all the other sports are in their offseason. I actually began watching NASCAR about 11 years ago to fill the void of football and hockey, mainly because I despise baseball...
So many people are ready for football to start by the time they are forced to watch 160+ games of baseball with no other choices for 4+ months.

  • Shane,

I feel the same way about baseball coverage until football starts ... the baseball season is too long.
