I think I see an S also, which would make it read LOVIS, or Louis, right?? Which Louis would it be? Louis XIV? Louis XIV reigned from 1638-1715.

LOUIS XIV R(ex) DE FRAN(ce) ET NAVAD

...only it doesn't look like it reads "XIV" but more like you said, "III" or possibly "XIII"

Thanks for the input Jester! Yes, I agree with the Louis, but it doesn't look like XIV.

I think it's Louis VIII (who preceded Louis XIV), so maybe the date isn't 1647?

  • Louis XIV never (to my knowledge) had it written as XIV. Louis disliked the subtractive system of Roman numerals and insisted that XIV was written as XIIII.

Personally i think XIV looks better but that's just me.

Good point, Syl. I've often seen 4 written as IIII and not IV, especially on older coins. So in fact this coin could say XIIII; it fits. I believe the date does say 1647.

    Louis of France and Navarre.

    LOVIS(??)IIRDEFRANETNAVAD
LOVIS= Louis(??)II= "XIII" or "XIIII"R= ROI (King) (Edit: I guess we're using Latin, so it would be REX rather than ROI, wouldn't it.)D= DE (of)FRAN= FranceET= andNAVA= NavarreD= (a mintmark, I believe, from the way it is oriented with the other letters)

Y'know... after looking some more, I think it could be Louis XIII, and dated 1617, perhaps?

I was going to say I was fairly certain it is Louis 13. See here for a 1617 denier tournois. But I really don't know. I haven't been able to find any other decent example photos.

One other tidbit, this (the same thing is repeated on several German lexicon sites) says that the last time the denomination was minted was 1647.
  • It is Louis XIII - double tournois, buste juvenile au col rabattu 1627-D Lyon - mintage of 125, 280

Yes I know it doesn't look much like a 2 in the date, but 1627 is the only date ending in 7 when the design was struck in Lyon.
    knowledge ........ share it
