Putting away some modern boxes, yes or no?

What do you guys think about putting away a few boxes of some of the quality modern stuff that's out there? Specifically 1993 and 1994 SP (Jeter and A-Rod RC's), and 1995 Bowman's Best (Vlad and Andruw Jones RC's). Maybe 1993 Finest too. Long term, do you think these boxes will appreciate?

Just a thought I had.

Not exactly what I call modern, but I guess if you want to call them that. I think those are nice boxes, but the other players in them have
no potential. Sure you know that Arod and Jeter can be pulled (or can't they), but that rip will most likely never be more than a
hunt for one player. Obviously the Finest is a different issue. Perhaps the best represntation of how great inserts can be. I think
even those will deprecaite over time.

What about bowman chrome?? 04 BC baseball or 02 BDP...those are monster issues that have amazing potential. Todays rookie
products are much bigger in player selection than past years. Might be worth putting away a few. The 02 BDP has already
tripled in value in just 3 short years.

    01 Heritage anyone??

I'm not that familiar with modern cards per se but I am very familiar with investing techniques. Just some quick advice - the stuff that is selling for a bit of a premium like the 02 BDP Kevin mentioned - that's actually what you want to invest in - that's the stuff, for the most part which will continue to increase in value. The low priced "junk" will most likely still be low priced junk ten or twenty years from now. There are of course many exceptions to the rules of investing, but the above advice is a good place to start.

Those cards quickly rise and fall. It may seem like a good idea to hoard 95 Bow. Best while Andruw is on fire, but it will not last. 6-7 Years ago it seemed that buying 89UD boxes was money in the bank. Same with 85T, I would not go down this road.

Not like a long term capital gains mutual fund with a good track record IMO.

I honestly think quality wax boxes from 1980-1985 are very undervalued at the moment. No, they wont ever be 1k per box, unless you plan on living another 50 years, but you have virtually no risk as rookies of Henderson, Clemens, Mattingly, Boggs, Gwynn, Sandberg, Ripken, etc will always be in demand. Guess its the difference in investing in single stocks versus mutual funds, single stocks can make you rich OR broke, but mutual funds will keep you in the money.

How can anyone honestly think that holding '02 or '04 product would be great long term? Short term maybe, but you have to pay attention and know when to sell.

Wasn't '97 Bowman Chrome and '95 Bowman and Bowman's Best "can't miss" as well?

sagard..are you familiar with the players who fill those sets or is this just a blanket statment?? I agree with the second part of
your post but wonder if that is just a blanket comment too.

How many HOF'ers do you see in 2002 BDP??

  • Two words -- GRADED VINTAGE!
  • Considering 1995 Bowman + Bowman's Best has RC's of Vlad, Andruw, Rolen, Abreu (and Beltran if you count the error in Bowman's Best), I wouldn't say those boxes were a miss. I think Bowman at $115-$145 and Best at $300-$350 are reasonable current prices for these boxes. Did they used to sell for higher than they do now?

2002 Bowman Draft Picks is a good call, a ton of great players in that box.

I thought I was somewhat familiar with the '95 and '97 Bowmans Best/Chromes. Are both not are far cheaper now than they were years ago despite Andruw Jones and Vlad playing extraordinarily well?

Maybe I'm wrong, you certainly follow these things much closer than I.

yeah until Travis Lee bombed lol

Don't blame Vladdy and Andruw for what happened, blame the companies for putting in autographed rookies into products which
suddenly make these cards look kinda cheap. Next to a Pujols autographed rookie card, no much can stack up!

Before you buy boxes to put away, make sure they do not have much of the box value tied up in cards which were issued as redemption cards.
