Hollywood Park show get-together

Several current and former CU board members will be getting together Saturday, September 10 at about 9:00 a.m. for breakfast at Norma's (4412 W. Century Blvd, Inglewood - near the corner of LaBrea and Century, less than a mile from the show). If you're coming to the show and want to hang out with fellow collectors beforehand, join us. We're a friendly bunch (even Vargha).

I mean this sincerely - I wish I lived near some of you to meet up. In fact, I don't think an afternoon would be enough time!

Perhaps I will see you all next year at the National in CA?

It's true! But all they talk about is baseball cards. Even now that baseball season is over, they refuse to recognize football image.

Hope to see you tomorrow Joe!

  • Sat at 9am?? ouch, I am probably going to hit the show Sunday at 3pm, if I go that is. Let me know how the show is this time. Wasn't too hoping last time, but these things go in ebbs and flows.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!
  • I went yesterday for a few hours. Didn't pick up much, just a few cheap wax boxes for fun.

It was nice seeing Steve Taft at the show. It's been awhile since I've seen him. He had a nice selection of GAI graded Star cards and his usual assortment of cool cards from the 70's, 80's.

Andy Madec was there displaying the cards for his October auction.

I think I counted 3 dealers with any kind of quantity of pre 1990 wax (more than a few packs!). 86 Donruss packs for $4. 1990 Score hockey packs for $1 a piece. That pretty much sums up the wax scene....

I haven't seen my buddy Chris Webber in awhile. Was he selling there? I know he was at one time the one that was setting up the card shows at H.P.
  • I went late to the show on Sunday. I arrived at 2:45pm. About 75% of the guys were already packed up. I went at the same time before, and usually the guys were still selling, guess it was a bad day. I grabbed a wax box of 05-06 Topps BB for $40 and some 1960 Topps FB commons and a Gifford for $50. So that's not that much for that show, $100 or so. I usually try to get some more vintage, but most guys were packed up.

Anyone else seen shows pack up and end 90 minutes before closing time???

It's a Hollywood Park tradition for some dealers to leave early Sunday afternoon (or not even open up Sunday). People were packing up early on Saturday too.

I did well on cheap wax, and will post a box break of my '05 Leaf BB magazine retail when I get around to it. It was an awesome box ($33 for 24 8-card packs, and I got 50% more inserts than I expected). image

I never saw anyone working Andy Madec's table - I guess the auction items don't really need much supervision.

The people are the best part of the show. The get-together amounted to 8 people, although Jason (owner of the #1 ranked '59 Fleer set) left before I arrived. Also present were Anthony (Griffins) and his son Griffin, David Vargha and his son Michael, Kevin (onlychild), and Mark (MorrellMan).

We'll probably have another one at the next HP show (February), and possibly before then.

I talked to Andy Madec for a while Saturday morning, and he and Steve were at Andy's table all morning. You must've hit them at an off minute. Andy and Steve are usually very accesable.
Overall the show was a dog, IMO. Considerably worse than June. I"m not sure it's worth the 15 minute drive anymore, other than for the social aspect.

Wow, flew into LA (FLA to CA!) and it seemed my jet almost landed right on the top of Hollywood Park. image

It is so funny, Hollywood Park even had a huge "HP" sign on their roof!

I did spend a few hours at HP. I played in a mini Texas Holdem Poker Tourny there! (August!) LOL!

  • I have gone to the show on Sunday and had much better luck with dealers actually being there. However, that wasn't the on NFL kickoff sunday. Maybe they packed up because the show was a dud. The dealer who does the Frank and Sons shows in City of Industry, and is in the middle with all the old magazines, said the show was pretty average. I heard one other dealer say it was a waste of time. I guess with the booth fee they need to sell a lot to make it worth the hassle.

  • On the Naxcom site, they were selling tables for $319 a piece.

You wonder how many dealers can turn a profit by the end of Sunday given the travel expense, gas and table fee.
