Richard Klein, “THE EUROPEAN WAR”, 1915, Blackened Cast Iron, 67.1mm, 55.8g, Choice UNC.
Obverse: A naked, helmeted rider on a rearing horse brandishes a sword and lighted torch. In the background (under the horse) a fortress burns. In the exergue, 1914.
Reverse: A wreathed sword is crossed with a sheaf of wheat where the Iron Cross hangs, 1915. Inscription reads “Gott Mit Uns” (God with Us), “Europäischer krieg” (European War).
Klein is little known for his kunstmedaillen of which he made few. He later became a fervent Nazi and designer of innumerable Party Day and Day of Labor badges, receiving the nickname “Pinback Klein”. This does detract from the fact that this is a fine example of a German Expressionistic war medal.
