Cigarette cards with stamps

Ok, so far all my questions have been answered on this board, no matter how esoteric I thought my question was, well here's another.

I found these cigarette cards on ebay a couple years ago. They were issued by Dukes cigarettes. The reason I got them is because I also collect stamps and thought it was too cool to find an item that fit into both my hobbies. Can anyone give me any information on them like date, how many cards issued or how many series? They appear to be Chromo-lithographed (did I spell that right?).

  • These are from the 1889 N85 set. Each card has a picture depicting sending, recieving, reading etc a letter. Each card has many posible stamps on the front - ie the same card can have different stamps and the stamps have nothing to do with the picture on the card. (From American Tobacco Cards) There are 50 cards in the set.

  • jvineyard - Thanks for the info. I always wondered why they put a German stamp on the card depicting a Spanish letter carrier, but I guess it was just random.
