Raw Buy

I bought this raw tonight, something I don't usually do. I have been trying to collect all the all star cards from 1977. I have them all in PSA 8 or better with the exception of Toby Harrah(tough card, anyone know the pop?), Kingman, and Fidrych. I got outbid on a PSA 9 Kingman a month ago and that is the only graded one I have seen in the months I have been looking. I am hoping this will grade out at an 8.

What do you think?

Based on the high-quality scan, I'd say it would grade somewhere between PSA 1 and PSA 9.
  • hi end 8 or lo end 9 if theres no surprises.

    psa-7..psa-8..psa-9
    ..3.........9.........8
  • It should make an 8
  • It would be great if it pulled a 9. I paid $15.50 for it ($21 after S&H and mandatory insurance)

I am guessing that pop report is for the Toby Harrah, with only 20 graded, no wonder I am having trouble finding it!

Not to burst your bubble, but you overpayed a tad for this. I bet DGF would sell you the same card in 8 or better for a fraction of that cost. He probably has multiple raw cards of Kingman and Toby for that matter.
  • I agree that I didn't exactly get a deal on the card. If I didn't need it so bad, I probably wouldn't have paid the $15.50+. I don't collect to re-sell, so finishing a collection is more important than any future return on my investment. That been said, I would sooner pay less than more! Who is this DGF?

Welcome to the club. I collect 77 Topps all-stars as well. I have them all in PSA 9 or better except for Munson which I only have in an 8. DGF (Down Goes Frazier - Phil) is a board member who collects the 1977 set. I bought a PSA 9 Fidrych and Harrah from him myself. He knows a lot about this set and has helped many others. He posts ont he SGC board quite a bit these days but shows up over here occasionally.
  • I will definitely have to look him up. I guess the Kingman in 9 is a tough one to get. Actually, besides the Harrah, it may be the toughest all star to find in this set.

Yeah, the Kingman is pretty tough. I think the Munson is pretty tough (or at least pricey) as well. The Randy Jones is also fairly difficult for some reason. It's a great set though. Keep on searching and you will be successful. Heck, the hunt is at least half the fun.

I collect 1977 Topps All-Stars by SGC, and here's what I have so far.

    American League:

1B Rod Carew, SGC 96 (paid ~$40 for it)
2B Bobby Grich, SGC 96 (traded with other SGC collector)
3B George Brett, SGC 88 (paid <$15 for it)
SS Toby Harrah, don't have it
OF Fred Lynn, SGC 96 (paid <$15 for it)
OF Ron LeFlore, SGC 96 (paid <$15 for it)
OF Rusty Staub, don't have it
C Thurman Munson, don't have it
P Mark Fidrych, SGC 84 (looks totally undergraded --- paid $15 for it raw)

    National League:

1B Steve Garvey, SGC 92 (paid <$10 for it)
2B Joe Morgan, SGC 86 (need to upgrade -- submitted raw)
3B Pete Rose, SGC 88 (crossed from SCD 8)
SS Dave Concepcion, SGC 92 (paid <$10 for it)
OF Dave Kingman, SGC 86 (seems undergraded)
OF Greg Luzinski, SGC 92 (submitted raw)
OF George Foster, SGC 96 (paid <$15 for it)
C Johnny Bench, don't have it
P Randy Johnson, don't have it

    Notes:

    1. A SGC 96 Fidrych went for well over $100 on ebay in last year, and I was upset about being overbidded.
    2. I've never seen Harrah, Jones or Rusty Staub graded by SGC on ebay ---- I think they are all tough
    3. A SGC 92 Munson went for over $50 on ebay in last year

My guess is the toughest are:

    1. Fidrych
    2. Kingman
    3. Munson

I've looked for Staub, Jones and Harrah in PSA 9 to cross-over, but I cannot recall seeing them on ebay ---- ever!

    Enjoy your collection!
    Erik
  • No wonder Randy Johnson has nothing left on his fastball. He's been pitching since 1977!
(edited to add: I think you meant Randy Jones)

I also collect 1975, 1976, 1978, 1979, and 1980 Topps AS cards so I am always looking for a good trade in case anyone is interested. Good luck collecting! Bobby
