Mantle '53 Bowman in PSA 9!

Current SMR at 9k and a seller's "buy now" price of $10,400.00. I've sold this seller (i.e., cards_comics_jax) a bunch of high end lo-pop '68 Topps material in PSA 9 and 10, a few years back. I don't remember the details, but PayPal charged-back my account because of unauthorized use of credit cards. He emailed me explaining he was charged back on his Paypal account, because of items he sold, and that "triggered his accounts to be frozen". He emailed me right away, and said he would send me a check for his items, a week later, I received payment in full and all was well. If I remember correctly, he was a pretty serious collector of PSA 1968 Topps material. I also think he was a rare comic book dealer in Jacksonville, Florida. I guess he relocated (i.e., Arlington)? The reason I'm bringing all this up, is when you think you've been paid via Paypal. and all is well, and you ship out expensive items, only to find out that Paypal reversed the payment, because of "unauthorized use of credit cards", ...makes one "weak in the knees!" LOL! If that ever happens to any of you, I hope it ends well, as it did for me. 3 1/2 years and many hundreds of paypal deals, this was one "one and only" I got "charged back" by Paypal (it was "one time too many"!).

The Mantle Auction of a '53 Bowman PSA 9

edit: He's sure auctioning-off a lot of nice material now: Seller's Link to Seller's Current ebay Auctions! (i.e., Nolan Ryan RC in PSA 9!, '52 Mays, 1914 Ty Cobb, '56 Mantle PSA 9, and a 2005 Donruss Babe Ruth 1/1 for a mere $25,000 "buy now" price tag! My oh my!)

interesting to note that the seller isn't accepting PayPal as payment for the auctions of the high end stuff....

it's pretty irrelevant to accept paypal on transactions of this size. paypal will not allow you to use a credit card and force you to send an echeck. as a seller , if I am going to get a check, I would rather have a certified check than an echeck from paypal. as a buyer , you have no recourse through paypal anyway since you can't use a credit card.

I sold this seller a high end 75 topps set for about $1400 about 3-4 months ago and I remember he overnighted me a business check for it and it was a very pleasant and easy transaction .
  • I bet he's glad that "sararuefan" is interested in a few of his auctions, as they've drove the prices way up on some.

  • Thanks. I'm it's new owner... the Topps 1956 Mickey Mantle #135 is easily my favorite Mantle card. You could not have bought this particular example for under $20K 3-4 years ago, but the price has come down and at just over $9100, the price seems right, and they don't come much nicer. Expensive? Yes. Check out the centering on the back---absolutely perfect. Should arrive by thursday. Really looking forward to receiving it.

Outstanding buy TM - what a beautiful card! I'm a stickler for back printing and centering myself - not as important as the front but still very important to me so I can really appreciate that back centering.
  • Thank you. It really is a spectacular issue imo. The seller provided glorious, huge sans of both the front and back. I am not too sure this particular specimen would not have had a shot at a 10 if the L-R centering were just a whisker better. This one is going in the vault, as some say...

It's the most I've ever spent on a piece of pasteboard, but I think it is my best purchase ever quite frankly. I'm sure I will engage in the requisite staring contest with the Mick's image upon its arrival heh heh, I just can't wait. How would I go about insuring such a card btw? I know that you own a few high end cards yourself... thanks in advance.
