vintage rookie card question..

It seems some players had 2 rookie cards. Take for example, Carlton Fisk. His true rookie card was the '72 card. Then in '73 he gets another card labeled 'All-Star Rookie'. Although I assume that reflects the prior year. Same situation on Munson's 70/71 card. Kinda dumb question, but I always wondered about that..

  • I believe the earlier one is considered their "rookie" card.

If I remember right, Ron Cey was pictured on 2 "rookie" cards as well (1972 & 73) , and Lou Piniella, I think, was on like 3 or something.

The first issue is generally always the "rookie card", but in some cases, the second year card holds a small premium if it is the first card the player appears on by himself. The first issue card is the one that you want, however - if you are seeking a rookie card.

Topps used to put the "All Star Rookie" designation on cards dating back to at least 1961. And yes, it was meant to reflect the previous year.
