Bowman Chrome box break!! Nice!!

I've always considered myself a little unlucky when it comes to opening any boxes or packs. But I got a little lucky today. After buying the Emmitt Smith auto I mentioned in a previous thread today, I splurged and bought a box of 2005 bowman chrome. Seems the card to hit was a Billy Butler auto as his cards are the hottest on ebay.

My box? A Billy Butler Refractor Auto.. AND.. a Dontrelle Willis 1 of 1 Black Printing Plate.

Not bad for a guy who is usually unlucky.

I actually had my 8 year old opening the packs and we're both excited now. Maybe my luck is changing??

    Congratulations Shawn!
That's incredible! I would consider running out and getting some lottery tickets while you're hot!

Ive opened over 2 cases of bc and have yet to pull a base Butler not to mention a refractor!! Are those cards for trade? If so let
me know who you collect. Thanks!

    Kevin

  • I pulled numerous Butler autos from Topps Chrome.

    The Xfractor went for $250.

    Black refractors, $150 I think.

    Reg. refractors, 75-100.

Base autos - up to 50.

    Nice pull.

Mike: Thanks again for posting my cards in a better scan.

Kevin: I haven't thought much about a trade. I usually end up putting these cards on eBay so I can afford my next box. image

I have a good idea what the Butler will bring, any idea on what the 1 of 1 Dontrelle will bring? That's the first card I've ever had numbered lower than 25, a 1 of 1 stamp on the back is pretty cool. Is this card going to bring $10, $50, $100? I have no idea. I only collect my hometown guys (Colts, Pacers, and Reds), and the PSA cards on the top 200 list. Don't know what a fair trade would be. PM me before I list the cards on eBay.

Thanks again for the kind words. My scratch off ticket today was a loser Mike, I tried.

Nice pulls, but who the hell is Billy Butler? By the way, I stopped buying RCs in 1995 because I had never heard of anybody worth pulling in a Bowman Chrome pack, and had to wait at least 3 years before they became a bonafide star. Who remembers Rich Asadorian, Jose Cruz Jr., Travis Lee, Ron Wright, Rick Ankiel, and the countless other sure things who have brought big coin out of the gate. And the ones who do, usually take 5 years minimum to reach superstar status (Pujols and Ichiro being the exceptions). Your inclination to sell I believe is well-grounded.

I think you should get $100-150 on the Willis, but you never know with the 1 of 1 market. At least he's hot right now which could bode well for you, but it's a nice collectible that may be worth holding on to because Willis is a stud for life (barring major injury). Also, I semi-regret all of the rare pulls I've had (not many) and sold because I don't think I could get the cards back even if I had the money to because of rarity. Nothing beats being able to relive the thrill of busting that pack and seeing a gem hidden amongst the commons.

The 1/1 plate will probably get you $35 or so. The Butler will do what others have done. I know Butler is popular but I thought the new Laroche kid was the big ticket in bowman chrome this year? I seem to recall a gold refractor of his topping the $500 mark a few weeks back.

I've sold a few of these 1/1 plates on Ebay - tough to say what they are really worth. I think the fact that Willis is hot right now might help you, but they are really specialty items with limited collector appeal. I'd guess $50-$75.

I think you make a great point Lee about selling off nice pulls. Or any card in your collection that is nice.

But when you have such a limited income as I have, it's almost a necessity if you want to keep buying. There's just so much out there at such a variety of costs that I simply can't afford everything, or even a little of everything. So I have to compromise.

One example that comes to mind is I send in a raw 89 UD Griffey and a 95 Bowman's Best Guerrero to PSA about a year or so ago. They both came back PSA 10's. Nice cards, and I sometimes wish I still had them. But I sold both of my 10's and bought 9's in return. And I netted about $500 above and beyond to buy some other things I wanted, like a 1965 PSA 7 Steve Carlton Rookie and a 1973 PSA 7 Mike Schmidt rookie. It's the only way I can afford a little of everything: to sell when I do get a decent pull.

Some of the people on these boards spend more in a week than I do in a year, and I'm often green with envy. So Butler and Dontrelle have to go. They will more than cover the cost of my box, and I still have a nice stack of future rookies (like you said, 5 years from now) that I basically have nothing invested in.

That's just the way it goes for me.

That is really cool! I do the same with some crazy psa 8 1955 topps commons. When I see a certain one I have go for 2-300 over what I paid for it, I will dump mine and get a 7. As far as Butler and Dontrelle, I would say sell and build the base set.

check out the Billy Butler bowman chrome Superfractor 1/1 on ebay...I think it's around $2,500 with well over 6 days to go

Billy Butler is a supreme stud and this is the crown jewel of the bowman chrome set. It was pulled by a guy who's wife just delivered a
new baby boy...talk about great luck.

There isn't better value today in cards than bowman chrome..always filled with the top rookies. There will be years of prospecting
on these cards before these guys even hit the majors!! FUN FUN FUN

  • That is one ugly $2500 card. Reminds me of those 25cent stickers you can get out of a machine at the bowling alley.
