I have mixed reviews about this submission, but overall I think I could (should?) have done a little better based on what I thought I should get. I think I got a tough grader, but supposedly they're all the same, which we know isn't possible as long as the graders are people. Should have been way more 9s and less 7s in the 1975 Topps FB. Also, thought I had more than one 10 in the 87 Fleer basketball. Also, i thought all the 86 Topps FB were 9s, which only about half pulled MINT. I'll probably crack and resubmit about a dozen cards and see what happens.

I have been there. The anti climactic grades popping is a bad feeling. Nice 75's though, I love that set. The Youngblood is either a 1/1 or a 1/2 depending on when they popped.

Where did you get the 75's? Also 86's are tougher than h-e-l-l. I have never done the resubmitting thing, but I am tempted with my 77 OPC's that got pounded.

I have noticed that they are very tough on the stickers, I am thinking they dont want to increase wealth in the marketplace???image

Just curious, do you do that under modern bulk? How long did the grades take?

They were entered under the $5 August special on 8/22. Nice turnaround time.

zef- I found the 75s at a card shop. I posted about it a while ago: Card shop find

Mass- the 87 Fleer stickers are very tough. Probably 98% of them are printed on a tilt, and the backs are very flaky all around the borders. I'm actually feeling pretty good about the 9's on both Magics. It was the regular 87 Fleer cards that I think were undergraded. Actually, I'm mostly pissed cause I couldn't find a thing wrong with the Malone. I thought it was a 10. Also, thought the Michael Cooper was a 9 which would be the lowest pop 9 in the set- easily a $50 card for the registry guys to fight over. I was expecting 8s on the Jordans and actually wouldn't have been too wurprised to see 7s. They were 80/20 with a small print spot in his name.

The Kirilenko cards are an investment because I think the guy is a stud ready to have a breakout year. One of the SPX RCs is #'d 47/1999 which is his jersey number. Since his nickname is AK47, I really think this card would have a lot of added value if he does ever become a superstar. I hope it is one of the 10s.

This submission illustrates why I just didn't bother with the August special. There are just so few cards from that era that are worth getting graded that IMO it just wasn't worth it. The question is: What does a guy do with all his misses? If I'd made a submission in Aug. I'm sure it would have looked a lot like yours, Lee, so I'm in no way insulting you. But it just makes me sick whenever I kick out many hundreds of dollars to get stuff graded and end up with a bunch of slabs that I can't get 2$ each for.

So you got 1997 and 2001 cards through on that special? I thought it was only 1972-1992 cards? I could have sent in another 50 cards easily if I had known that. Can you usually "sneak" those in?

Heh, envoy, didn't even realize it. I guess teither they didn't care or they didn't notice. Boo, you're right to a degree. However, if I got the grader that slabbed my last $5 special sub I'm sure I would have done a lot better. Idon't think I had one 7 in the bunch and a lot of the cards were from the 70s. I don't think I eyed the cards differently for either sub, and I only sent in cards I thought were 9 or better except maybe a couple, so all I can say is I guess it depends a lot on who grades your cards. On my last sub I got some 10s that I thought were generous and I think I'm going to feel the opposite when I get these back. It's a shame they can't be more consistent company-wide.

    I agree that it's a shame.

I tend to work from the assumption that the guy sending the cards in knows their condition better then the guys grading them, if only because the submitter spends more time with them and actually has something invested in how they come out. When stuff like this happens it just turns off submitters.

cds, not too bad overall. i had a similar run of 87's that i thought were 9 min and most were 8's...and the stickers 7s (due to notching more than the tilt).

    congrats

    Thanks,

  • Fairly solid submission. I concur regarding the somewhat empty feeling. I might have to give BGS a shot for a while.

I cracked and resubmitted six cards for membership renewal. Results:

    1 12329992 1969 TOPPS 50 BOB CLEMENTE N/A 6 (Formerly an 8)
    2 12329993 1970 TOPPS 350 ROBERTO CLEMENTE N/A 6 (Formerly a 7)
    3 12329994 1966 TOPPS 30 PETE ROSE N/A 6 (Formerly a 7)
    4 12329995 1959 TOPPS 430 WHITEY FORD N/A 7 (same)
    5 12329996 1960 TOPPS 350 MICKEY MANTLE N/A 6 (same)
    6 12329997 1965 TOPPS 207 PETE ROSE N/A 6 (Formerly a 7)

No bumps here! Guess it's my own fault. Kind of a sick feeling, however.

Sorry to hear about your disapointment Lee.. It's a shame that it turned out that way. Are you planning to re-submit quite a few of the cards that you think deserve a better grade?

  • I'll probably crack 5 or 6- the ones I think I was robbed on AND whose values increase by getting bumped up a grade. Maybe next time I'll split it up into a couple different submissions and see if the grading is consistent.
