Steve This is not a tough card or anything and the SMR is in the 150$ range - but like you said, if two guys want it bad enough.
But, heck, why not just wait for another? Not sure what the pop is but it's irrelevant to me - there's just no way I would want to spend that kind of money - even if I wanted the card.
It's probably the only 9 of Seibern to be on the market for a long-time. You can agree or disagree with the price - but odds seem high to me that you won't get another opportunity for a 9 under $500 in the next few years.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
it's funny , I emailed Alan about that card last night as I was amazed that such a borderline 9 could sell for that much and congratulated him. I just bought this card for $500,
when money is an issue I guess you choose your purchases when it's not , you don't look at the alternative of what you could buy.

Marc Now that one is a beauty and a bargain comparatively!
I think it's only fair to be careful about how we look at the 9s. That's why altho I think it's a lot of money.....it's relative to the wants and budget of a collector.
Keep in mind that the hi end collectors who spend that kind of money for low pop cards drive the market and give the entire set a jolt of popularity and for the investor minded collectors, help maintain a healthy price for the set IMO.
pC: I recently picked up this Brooks for 203$ - that makes yours a steal!!!
For all those naysayers that keep harping on PSA not being able to tell the difference between 8's and 9's on most given days, or how they're inconsistent when it comes to grading cards that are miscut, have print dots, rough cuts, etc...let them look at this auction and drool.
It's quite obvious the KNOWLEDGEABLE buyers with the big bucks trust the trained and certified PROFESSIONALS at PSA, and quite frankly, that's all that matters.
The final price does not surprise me. The 1963 Fleer Baseball registry is very competitive at the top, and the two high bidders in this auction own the number 2 and 3 finest all-time sets.
I can tell you from personal experience bidding against these guys that they are both heavy hitters with multiple top grade sets, and money is really not much of an issue for them.

bxb Good point! That's why I'm happy putting a really nice PSA 8 set together. I don't even mind a 60/40 centering on the key cards if it means getting them at 60% SMR.
I paid 102 for the Drysdale - smr 175; 177 for the Wills smr 210; 172 for the Adcock smr 300; 218 for the Clemente smr 325 and 108 for the Gibson smr 175. They are all nicely centered. If they were well to perfectly centered, they would go for smr.
Does this mean that they were both shilling there auctions ? I have bought many things from both in the past and have looked at there past history. I just don't see it.
I have bought a lot of stuff from him... anyone know what this is about? I'll be upset if it is shilling, I don't think I ever noticed it on the stuff I bought, but then again, I guess I didn't look that close.

If I was the seller of this crap I would be jumping up and down like I just won the lottery!

I don't know if I would resort to any forms of self mutilation Kevin but I will have to say that's a lot of money!
I got this one for 22.50 last year - a major bargain in comparison - heck, maybe even worth cracking for a bump!
But, I'll say, maybe the guy can afford that much like I feel about 22 bucks?
Mine is centered better also.
mike
Mike your card at 22.00 is a steal.
(in comparison to the 9's price) anyway.
I just don't see a 9 for this card being worth almost 40 times more.
I do not follow this set all that much but I would think 5 or 6 times the codt of an 8 would be in the ballpark.
I could be wrong? is it the key card or somthing in mint?
SD
Mike your card is better IMO

i'd much rather have Stones PSA 8.. i'd even pay more for it..
