1972- P- TYPE # 2 IKES..........................................

The supply of high grade , and medium grade Ike Type # 2 coins are vanishing, like the American buffalo.
In The Authoritative Reference On Eisenhower Dollars, James Sego Estimated that less than 100 examples existed in MS65. So far, only 20 have been certified ny PCGS.
I attend every show, within a 500 mile radius of where I live, and even AU examples are very, very , tough to find.
The same is true for high grade business strikes, color coins, error coins, and prooflike Ikes. This does not mean that they are not still
available. What it does mean is that there are a lot less than even 6 months ago, and prices are headed back up for most of these coins.

You are right. Believe it or not, I've NEVER cherry picked a type 2 72-P.
I have a MS65 for sale right now, along with most other grades.
They are getting tougher to replace.
I think my guess of 8 years ago will prove pretty accurate. I figured 1% of total mintage. Remember to add 9 NGC MS65's and I'm sure close to that same number at ANACS, and many that haven't been searched.
This will prove a sleeper coin.

COINDOG.....I agree!
I've only been able to find a few in rolls,...and nothing above 64.
Any Type 2 in 65 that I have were bought already slabbed.

I LOVE IKES!

I got lucky and added an MS64 type II to my Eisenhower registry set. The coin was purchased as an Anacs MS65 , and was cracked out
and submitted to pcgs 3 times before I gave up and accepted the MS64 grade. The only saving grace was that I paid $300.00 for the
coin. Everything else I have purchased in the type II raw, has basically been sight unseen that turned out to be worse than what I had.

<< <i>Somebody needs some, I have some in all grades AU55 to MS65 (No MS60's) >>
Yeah me too (no 65s though), but I'm afraid that if I sell them, they will go up in value.

I found one in a roll about two years ago (63), other than that the ones I have are all paid for as Type 2s, although at significanlty lower prices than they are going for now.
I wonder how high they will go in the years to come....
I AM!.........but, I am also selling some here and there.

I Have been putting them aside for the last 3 years. I just sent 2 raw Type # 2 coins in for grading. I have 9 raw ones left, but they will grade au-58 to Ms 63.
Another guy in California has been putting them aside for about a year. In addition,
I think that James Sego was accurate on his estimations of Ms 65 coins.
Futhermore, I beleive that the majority of coins graded in the next few years will be Au examples. A good comparison would be the 3 Legged Buffalo population report. The type # 2 might eventually be a mirror image of that coin.( Although not as many examples grade
d )
Lastly, the Ms 64 population is wildly inflated, due to the many multiple submissions shooting for the MS65 grade.

The American buffalo (bison) is in no danger of vanishing!
A better example would be the indigo snake or the ivory-billed woodpecker.
But even if you had chosen a truly endangered species, instead of a bison, it is still a pretty weak analogy.
All these animals once existed in great numbers. But the Ty. 2 never was plentiful.
Edited to add:
By the way, say hi to Andy and Opie for me!

Bushmaster,
I will be glad to say hello ! You are right, about the buffalo ( american bison )
The reason I mentioned it was out of habit, also, the 3 legged buffalo population report looks similar in comparison to the type # 2 population report.
Fithermore, I collect only the " key " coins from the other series, and collect Ikes by the set. This has worked very well for me in the past.
It's like buying a common stock. The only way to sell high, is to buy low, and Ikes offer a great ground floor opportunity for the average collector !
