If you crack out a DMPL Morgan dollar to put in an album will it lose its DMPL quality?

Say from toning or some other complications.

I think that heavy toning can ultimately hide the mirrors on a pl or dmpl or proof coin- but I believe that some attractive rim toning works great with nice mirrors. As with a lot of things in life, I think it boils down to moderation.....

Cracking any DMPL coin could be a costly experiment as I'm told that grading standards for DMPLs have changed over the years and what was formerly a DMPL may no longer qualify, even if nothing at all changes with regard to how the coin looks - Just and FYI as seems to me that there are some pretty significant premiums for DMPLs that would be lost if they aren't in the holder.

I think DMPL morgans look better raw. The plastic holder interferes with the reflectivity. I can measure the clarity of the reflection easily with a raw coin. It is hard to do with a coin in the holder because you also get a reflection off the plastic.

Then I think few would crack out a DMPL. They are well protected in the holders.

  • I agree they look nicer, especially due to the plastic reflection problem. Generally slow natural toning won't keep it from reholder...... BUT, it is widely believed that PCGS at least, has tightened their old DMPL definitions, so that a great many marginal DMPLs with slightly grainy (frosty) fields, wouldn't make it back into PCGS holders today, if cracked out.

  • So, would it be ok to crack out a recently graded DMPL morgan. Of course it would be done very carefully.
  • Yes, if it's recent holder, you're sure you can read newsprint at 8" away on both sides, and you don't live near New Orleans. When not looking at it, I'd still store it in a Capital Plastic holder just for protection against dropping/scratching etc.image

  • I am going to put it in my Dansco type set. I really wanted a proof Morgan, but this is as close as I am going to come pricewise. Thanks for the help.image
