I don't collect much 70's stuff, but 1970 Topps football Super Glossies are my favorites.

I don't know how I could give a blanket answer here. I'm building a graded 1974 set and when they're right, they're a thing of sheer beauty. But when they're not, then wow are they ugly.

Most people don't like 1973s and I understand why. A lot of the cards have dull colors. But I think the set is special because of so many action shots and the photography captures the time (1972-1973) in terms of style, feel, etc. in addition to capturing baseball. The photography on 71s does this really well too.

1978 & 79 bring back so many memories of childhood. When I was 8 and 9, it was all about cards.

1970 & 1976 are OK, just nothing all that special to me. Just certain cards - like a super-clean 76 Bench or Schmidt.

1972 and 1975 are sentimental favorites for other reasons.

    Anyway. . .
So full of action, my name should be a verb.

Maybe I am twisting this but if I had the money to build 1970 to 79 Topps sets in graded form it would go like this.
76,75,71,72,70,78,77,74,73,79..... I would work on the first 5 together and then the last 5 together until I had them complete.

1975-1979 were the strong collecting years for me as a kid. I particularly like the 76 and 75 sets. I think 76 has some of the best photos.
But going on pure overall eye appeal 1971 is the most attractive.
  • I love them all.

    best to worst.

    71, 73, 72, 76, 77, 75, 78, 74, 70, 79

I think the action shots from 73 and 76 were great. Remembering opening that 1976 pack and seeing Lou Brock on the top or Johnny Bench and the dirt flying everywhere. Those were some great shots.

The paper quality of the 1974 and 1978 set was horrible. The 1970 set was so boring with the grey borders. It seemed that every card from that set always had a print line at the top or bottom.

  • Favorites: 1971, 1972 and 1978

    Dislike: 1974, 1976, 1977

Since I am pretty much finished upgrading my 1971 set, the 1972 and 1978 sets are going to be my next projects. However, it will be a while before I start them in earnest.

Did you include the OPC WHA sets in your ranking? Seriously, despite the centering problems, those are nice sets!
  • Since I'm the only person on the registry with complete sets from 1971 through 1975 (inclusive) I guess one could say they are all my favorite. I do however like best the 1971 and 1972 sets. I don't collect anything after 1975 however.
