WWII Coin Found Yesterday

I forgot to to post this neat find yesterday. It's a 1944 Five Centavos from the US occupation of the Phillipines. This coin was in my 'group of modern foregin' I've been going thru. Pretty historically significant...

    Neat find!
Calling it an occupation is technically incorrect as the Philippines were a U.S. Commonwealth (like Puerto Rico is) from 1936-45 though.

The foregin coins come from both our (wives and mine) world travels when we were in the service during the early 1980's. She was stationed at the US Embassy in Jakarta before we met. Most of the european stuff is from my adventures image

It seems to have a lot of corrosion on it. Why might that be?

I gave all my coins I picked up over the years serving in the military and federal service to a YN giveaway a few months back. I had picked up quite a few over time from here and there. They really added upimage

If it were a prewar silver coin with corrosion, I'd guess that it was thrown in Manila Bay with the other precious metals before the Japanese took over. In this case, however, your guess is as good as mine.
