Football collectors, need help in identification

I don't know if there are any Chiefs collectors on here, but maybe someone else can help. I found these at a local antique mall and can't seem to identify them with any of my catalogs.

At first I thought they were a team isssued thing, but they don't match any of the team issues listed in my books. They measure 5 x 7, and are blank-backed. Most of the team issues listed in the books are 8 x 10 and have the names printed below in the white border. They don't appear to be trimmed and are on a thick, non-glossy paper, not cardboard. They also have facsimile sigs, in white, which are rather hard to see. They appear to be from the late 60's or so. Any suggestions?

Well, I couldn't find for sure what those are, but if you can find examples of any of these, maybe you'll find your match?

    1963-65 Chiefs Fairmont Dairy
    1966 Chiefs Team Issue
    1967 Chiefs Fairmont Dairy
    1967 Chiefs Team Issue
    1968 Chiefs Team Issue
    1970 Topps Posters Inserts
    1970 Clark Volpe
    1970 Chiefs Team Issue

(These all came up as Bobby Bell cards from 1960-1970) I'm doing some more research for you...
  • The Fairmont Dairy issues were printed on the sides of milk cartons, so they'd be too small.
The 66, 67 and 68 Team issues are all larger than mine (approx 8 x 10)
The 1970 Topps poster inserts are cartoony illustrations in color. Thes I know because I have a few.
The Clark Volpe issues are small reprints of paintings. I've seen these as well and am sure these aren't them.

The 1970 team issue I am not sure about. They don't have 1970 listed in my guides, so I guess that's at least 1 possibility.

BTW, thanks for the investigatory (is that a word?).

Jeez, you gave me a lesson image

They don't seem to be AP photo's since they have the facsimile autos on them. They must be some kind of team issued promotional photos. Google hasn't been much help, neither has Beckett online.
  • Yeah, I don't think they're AP photos either. These look like they were intentionally issued by someone for some purpose. BTW, I have 4 of the Dawsons and 3 of the Bells.

Like you, I'm still leaning towards a team issued item. One thing I've noticed about these BIG yearly price guides, is that they don't necessarily always include everything. You can routinely find items listed in the Beckett guide that are not in the SCD, and vice-versa. The 1970 team issue is a good example. It isn't listed in either of these books, but that don't mean they don't exist, and that could be a real possibility for these.

Another possibility is some sort of promotional item in KC. However, promos usually have whomever they are promoting for, advertised somewhere on the item, which these don't.

    Well, the mystery continues.

I did notice that there appears to be no 1969 Team Issue... I saw 1968 and 1970. Like you said though, odd that they would issue them in 5x7 if most of the other issues are 8x10.

I'm sure somebody will know... Let's hope anyway. image
  • Yes, it does seem strange. All of the listed team issues are around 8 x 10 or so. Until you get to one particular set issued in 1973-74, which are in fact 5 x 7. However, neither of these 2 high profile players are listed in this set, and these don't look like the example shown in the book. Oh well, maybe someone can help tomorrow. I hear my pillow calling my name.
