Sweet - Just got my grades for my 12 card 5 day submission too!

Jackpot day for me today! image

The Culpepper's were a BGS 9 and GAI 9.5. I'll have to see which came back which...

The rest were about what I figured as far as grades go, the Jurgensen surprises me, I thought that would be a 7, might've overlooked a surface defect. The Jim Taylor is nice since I got it raw off ebay and 8's sell for $100, I paid $22 for mine.

    Congratulations Josh
I assume the GAI 9.5 got the 10? Are these numbered or anything?

Yeah, they are serial #'d on the front. I scanned them both in their respective holders prior to cracking and submitting them. I would suspect they went 1 for 1 in grade, I actually thought the BGS 9 had a good chance too, so I won't be too surprised by either of them having made the 10. I'll post when I get them back though. It will be kind of interesting too, I submitted the GAI 9.5 to Beckett at nationals to try and cross it and they rejected it...So I'm interested to see what happens. Especially since BGS was essentially selling 9.5's to anyone who dropped off enough cards. :

BTW, did you check out my 84 card submission results from earlier? I did a little better on those.

These guys aren't terribly impressive, but I paid the right amount for them raw, they came back about what I expected so that's always good. I always feel bad when I let someone convince me thier card is a 7 and I pay 7 money and it comes back a 5 or a 6. In these cases (aside from the Jurgensen) I convinced the sellers the cards were 5-6 and paid accordingly. So I can't be too disappointed about that. i got what I paid for and the dealers got paid for what they had. Regardless of what they wanted to portray themselves having. image

When you say a seller is "convincing you" that they it is a 7 e.g. I assume you are talking SMR which may be higher than Beckett or another price guide?

If so, they're just off a bit - you can't charge as if the card were a PSA 7 since it's not and there's submission costs that the seller is not figuring in the price they're asking - if you know what I mean?

Mike, what I'm referring to is when I ask to see a card that a seller has raw and they give me a price. What I usually do is pop open my notebook or my SMR if I don't have any notes on a given card, and I see what SMR is for the grade I think the card is going to get. I am after all going to have it graded for my registry. So I see that price and if I have any notes that a given card sells much higher or lower than SMR in a given grade I take that into account. So for example, the guy that sold me the Tarkenton thought it was a 7 and was asking just under high Beckett for it. Well, high beckett is $225, he was asking 175. No way was this card a 7, and was more in line with a 5, but I thought maybe an outside shot at a 6. So I said thanks anyway, then we haggled over price, I said that I felt SMR was more inline with what this card sold for and that's what I use and I felt the card was more in line with a an Ex to ExMt grade and would want to pay around that price. We finally agreed that it probably was more in that grade and I paid $70 for it. SMR on a 5 is $85. So now I have $82 into it. I probably overpaid by a bit, but if it had gotten the 6 I was doing a bit better... I did let someone convince me my 1950 Bowman Joe Perry could be a 7, I felt a 6, we agreed on a price halfway in-between.. I got screwed, it came back a 5. Will probably resubmit it at some point as I do think it's a 6...but either way, I lost $$$ on that deal.

Generally speaking, Beckett is higher assuming the same grade on a given card than SMR. My little joke has always been if I'm buying I use SMR, if I'm selling I use Beckett. Doesn't work very well, but it sounds good. image
