Need Registry members opinions

Hi Everyone,

As you may be aware, we will be making some program enhancements to the PCGS Set Registry this fall. The Registry, which was built in 2000 and launched in Feb. 2001, has changed very little from its inception. But since then, technology has changed a lot. It is our intent to make the Registry easier to use and even more fun. We have a lot planned that we think you will love.

I received some great email from some of our members about changes they would like to see made and also read a very interesting post here in the forum a few weeks ago which provided us with even more good ideas.

Because I know the Registry inside and out, it is sometimes not so clear to me what some of the user issues may be. So I do have a few questions that may seem like “well, duh” to you. But it’s like that old adage, I can’t see the forest for the trees. Perhaps you can provide some answers.

1. After you edit a set and hit the VALIDATE button, where in the Registry to you want to land?

2. We will be doing a lot in the area of imaging, like allowing you to load obverse and reverse images, for example. But my question concerns the actual function. Is the browse and search method that we currently employ, satisfactory? If not, what other method would you find easier to use?

I look forward to your feedback either here or by email. Thank you!

    Hi BJ,

WHEN will we see a Proof Roosevelt Dime w/Varieties 1950-Date set??????? image

I think it is LONG overdue.

Edited To Add: I think the biggest improvement you can make is to find a way you don't have to enter the same coin in every set you put it in (like NGC now).

As for Q#1: I'd like an option to land back in the edit set mode OR in the area for the set I just edited.

As for Q#2: Can you enter a url for the pics now? If not that would be great for those hosting their own pics. For others, the browse & search seems easy enough. If you could just manually enter the URL in the same box that gets the result from the "Browse & Search" that would be great. image

    BJ,
    1) I sometimes add more than 1 coin and it could be used in multiple sets. I would like to be returned to a page that I can select from any of my other sets to add additional coins.

    2) The browse button is ok or I would have 2 buttons listed OBV and REV. Also a utility to resize my pictures like E-bay would be extremly helpful image

    3) I would like to see when you click on the Register/Edit that it takes me to the login screen, not another page that I have to scroll down and click edit again image

    Thanks for asking,
    Ken

One thing that I get peeved about is the "Add Coins" and then validate. There are so many times I'll enter all the coins, scroll down to the bottom and click "Validate"...uuuurrghhh!!!! I just lost all the coins I entered because I didn't hit "Add Coins" first, and then "Validate".

I believe the shortest distance between two points is a straight line...meaning, why overcomplicate the process. Just let me add the coins to my set in one step.

Thanks for allowing us to give you feedback...much appreciated!

    Hang on Guys and Gals,

Adding coins to multiple sets and MANY other features are being programmed in. Remember, I read very carefully all the emails you have sent to me and the post that was here several weeks ago, so there is really no need to repeat what has been said. Let's keep this thread simple and address the two questions I'm concerned about right now.

As other things pop up, I'll more than likely be back with more questions!

Also, regarding the addition of new sets, we have a huge want list we are addressing and we will be getting them up them up as quickly as we can. The next to go up are the early half dollars (FH & Draped Bust and the Capped Bust).

I think if you gave us a list of opitions on where to go using radio buttons such as
add/edit more coins, registry, home page....ect, that should cover it

Regarding the images, we will be allowing obverse and reverse images and will also incorporate auto-sizing. I'm more interested in learning if the browse and load feature that we currently use is satisfactory.

    Thanks for your feedback!

    BJ:

Many thanks for seeking our input!

The browse and load function seems to work just fine.

  • Answer to BJ: The logical place I'd like to end up after validating is--- back at the top of my Registry Set I just edited, and be back in the regular view mode. Logically in my case I'm interested in seeing my new added coins, and new descriptions/edits, and how the changes now look. Then I can also click once and go back and see where I stand on the whole list.

As for images, I don't know because I just paid Forum photographer to image and post 9 coins--2 sides. ANYTHING that makes it so I can go the the coin edit, hit one button, type in a file name, and hit another button to be finished would be just peachy--but I'd need it all clearly written out, and VERY simple. As it stands, I have to pay someone to size stuff and work things on my Morgan prooflike set.

    Thanks BJ for questions!!image

  • My two cents worth:

    1. After you edit a set and hit the VALIDATE button, where in the Registry to you want to land?
I'd prefer landing on the list of sets that could be edited.

    2. We will be doing a lot in the area of imaging, like allowing you to load obverse and reverse images, for example. But my question concerns the actual function. Is the browse and search method that we currently employ, satisfactory? If not, what other method would you find easier to use?
The way used on ebay for sellers when they put pictures up. Wish I could explain that, where the coin could be rotated and enlarged.

Since the registry is being changed, I hope you can consider the points raised in this thread too:

  • My input has nothing to do with the logistics of the Registry. Please remove the sets from the Registry that were not together at the time registry was started / not entered by the owner (Bass, Eliasberg, etc.). These are all great sets and deserve a "seperate" place in the registry. Many of the coins in these sets were not slabbed at all or not in PCGS holders. Would you let me enter a coin that I told you I owned before the Registry started?? I think NOT. Why do these sets get to play under a different set of rules than we do? Don't get me wrong, these sets were tremendous acomplishments and most will never be equalled. They are truly GREAT sets, but they should be placed in a completely "seperate" area of the registry. Please remove them from the regular Registry. Thanks, CCG
  • After validation, landing on the page showing your new ranking would be ideal.

The browse feature works fine for my Imac and I.

I would like to see a coin or coins entered into all the different set it qualifys for.
Some times members, like myself maybe short sighted or have tunnel vision and this would open thier eyes to other sets.

    BJ,

I have a request. It is a little off your topic but here it is: Would it be possible to write a program where PCGS automatically e-mails TOP Set holders when they get bumped down? Say the TOP 5-10 or even the front page set holders?

It would help us keep on top of multiple sets.

    Thanks, Gary

I would like to see a Copper/Nickel coin type set. That would include all coins with copper and nickel in their composition. The set would include a FE cent, a pre mid 1864 IHC, 3 cent nickel coin, Shield nickel, Liberty nickel, Buffalo nickel, Jefferson nickel, clad dime, clad quarter, clad half, clad Ike, clad SBA and even the Sac. Also it would include the 4 new Jefferson nickels.

There could also be varieties included such as Sheild nickel with rays, Liberty nickels with and without CENTS, type 1 and 2 Buffalos, bicentennial Ikes, halfs and quarters.

    1) When I validate one set, I usually need to go back to the first page where I can select another set to edit. It would be nice if it returned to this step (which is the first step.)

    2) Instead of just images, it would be nice if you could enter an obverse and reverse image as well as some larger text area for a description, story etc. The image link would then open a page that has the images as well as the description entered instead of just the images.

How about when you use the cert number lookup function having a little window or whatever telling you if the coin is in a registry set and maybe which set.

  • Dear BJ:

I know I'm hopelessly derriere garde with computers, and I have a dreadful time loading pictures. Several times people have sent me instructions on how to load pictures, but I've never once been able to do it successfully myself. The only way I've ever loaded pictures, even the logo by my name, is to have someone from my IT Department do it for me. This is why none of my Registry Sets have pictures. I'll bet there are a lot of collectors like me.

So, the first item on my wish list would be to enable computer illiterates like me to be able to load pictures to my registry sets as easily, say, as I can load pictures into an e-mail on my Eudora program. I click on a button that says load. A browser box opens. I find the file I want to load and click a button. Q.E.D.

Second, if you simplify loading pictures to the registry sets, why not do the same thing for the message boards? And to change your logo picture?

Third, there's a separate thread going now about how to improve the Registry Sets for the US Philippines series, which are my favorites. It's somewhat incoherent so let me summarize the main points ...

    (a) The US-Philippines need a home of their own. Currently, they're buried in "Private Issues and Territorial Gold." I for one would never have known that you had US-Philippine Registry Sets if a friend hadn't told me. So a separate listing please.

    (b) There are two entirely different reverses in the business strike series. The original reverse, used from 1903 through 1935. And the Commonwealth Reverse used from 1936 through the end of the series in 1945. The business strike type setshould be revised to reflect the Commonwealth Reverse.

    (c) The US Philippine series has many wonderful, fascinating varieties like the famous 1908-S "Horned S" Centavo ... the 1908-S S/S/S Centavo ... the 1913-S/S 20 centavo, and probably a good two-dozen more. I have far and away the most complete collection of these varieties. I'd be happy to help your people put together a variety set that would be a true pleasure for the serious collectors of these series.

There are other issues, but I think those are the main ones.

With best wishes, I am ...

    Hi BJ,
I really don't like the present interface for uploading photos. The first step that uses the standard windows interface is fine... but that should be the end of it. Why do I then need to go into a list and pick the photo I just uploaded?

Also, the upload feature sometimes keeps files names the same, other times it changes them to ACF____ and you have no idea what the file is.

An automatic set generation from all your registered coins is also useful, as are pull down menus of your available coins to fill a slot.
