The Gretzky Wagner

I have a couple of questions on this card. Was this the first card ever graded by PSA or the first Wagner graded. If it was the first card ever graded by PSA why does it not have the old flip with the zeros with the slashes?

I'm just guessing, but PSA probably never used that number when they started so they had it available, kind of like a checking account that starts with check number 1001.

I'm sure it went a long way to bringing credibility to them as a company.

On another note, are there other cards that you have seen that use the pedigree service? Can I reholder a card into a pedigree holder? Seems like a way for PSA to expand their business. It would be a nice reward for the the top registry positions of high profile sets. I like the idea of a card's provenance.

What do you mean by pedigree service?? I have never heard of that one.

    From PSA's submission services.....

    Pedigree Service
A service that will allow collectors to personalize their labels. For example, the "John Doe Collection" may appear on the PSA label. This will be offered on a case by case basis, reserved for “special” cards and/or sets that must meet certain high-end or rare criteria. Pedigree requests must be pre-approved prior to submission. Final approval is at PSA’s sole discretion. Please contact Customer Service for details and instructions.

I had read that when Brian Siegle bought it he had the flip changed from McNall/Gretsky, then changed back into it later.
Any card can be reholdered for a fee, keeping the cert but getting a new flip. PSA had the pedigree service for a while, then dropped it (and as a perk changed the free completion grades for registry participants from 90% to 75%) and has recently reinstated it on a case by case basis. Global does the same thing, expanding it to 3 lines on the back of the flip. I haven't seen any SGC holders pedigreed.

    the harry coll. was pedigred(sp)

I wouldn't mind a pedigree from certain collectors like barry halper, burdick....kind of cool.

its a silly thing...but in the coin hobby there is usually a nice premium for a famous pedigree..

If it comes from someone very famous or a mjor collector i would pay maybe 10% more for the provenance...Something like Mr X however was plain stupid.

A while back I saw a bunch of rare comics for auction that were graded with Nicholas Cage pedigree.

Now if you can find a 51 Bowman Mantle with Kelly Monaco pedigree (reference to Eye Candy thread on this board)....

    Stingray:

It *was* the first card ever graded by PSA. It happened in 1991.

Brian Seigel mentioned to me, in response to a question, that the card was pedigreed in a label with his name, but it was only for about a day or so. I have a picture of the card in the holder with his name on it somewhere at home - but he promptly wanted the McNall/Gretzky name back on it.

In memorabilia, etc. - provenance, etc. can affect price by many multiples. The same almost should be done for cards, I think. It isn't - but if you can trace your card's history through a series of collectors over the years - it seems a lot more significant than, say, pulling seven GEM MINT 1914 Cracker Jack cards out of an envelope last year and getting them freshly graded by SGC. But that's just my thought.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
