In another non-card forum, someone's friend is selling this lot of late 80s/early90s unopened boxes. What would you say the market value of all of this stuff would be?
Wouldn't retail be about $5 a box? He should have set the reserve at a maximum $250, especially with a $40 s/h charge.
What's the deal with the 1/1 in his title? I've got PLENTY of those same boxes
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
Two years ago I might have considered taking a flyer on something like this, but those late '80's early 90's boxes are just totally worthless now since you can't even make 20-30 bucks on a PSA 10 star card. I see this stuff all the time and I try to find an excuse to buy it and bust it, but I just can't find one.
Well considering his feedback is less than desirable.
The shipping is not $40 it is "shipping will be whatever UPS or DHL costs plus $40 packaging materials." so he want's $40 over what shipping actually costs.
And the product is nothing but overproduced garbage I wouldn't expect it to sell for half his starting bid.

Even if buyers thought those boxes were worth $450, which is unlikely enough, they will almost certainly be turned off by the $40 charge for "materials" - a cardboard box (or two) and some packing peanuts go for a lot less than $40 last I checked. Once this auction ends, he should relist it without that charge and an opening bid of about $100.
This is for you @thisistheshow - Jim Rice was actually a pretty good player.
I agree with the earlier statement that most of these boxes are in the $5 range. Personally, I wouldn't touch the stuff.

Ever do a completed auctions search on all of 4sc's accounts, including his making_the_grade id? I just did and there were 4,109 listings. I sorted them by ending price, and it didn't take long at all for the auctions to get in the low dollar range, with a lot of the stuff in the $20-$25 range not selling. I'm sure he's making good money or he wouldn't be doing it, but that's a lot of friggin work! That's why I usually stay out of the big submitter debates.
I can see why dsl started dealing in vintage more and jt went to superior. Like you said, that market just isn't anything like it used to be.

Too true, mon ami. The one exception is if you can get into a real oddball issue ('91 Topps Micro, '87 Fleer minis, or something like that) since you can sometimes find a guy who wants a card for his registry set. Also, you have a pretty good shot of getting a 1/1 if you score a 10. For instance, I picked up some '94 Tombstone Discs at a recent show since you don't see this come up very often. But when it comes to mainstream issues, blah! There's no percentage in it anymore.
I have checked 4SC's auctions, and I'm stunned at how bad some of his cards do. PSA 10 Nolan Ryans selling for 15 bucks, etc. etc. You'd be much better off buying high dollar cards post 2000 and getting those slabbed.

Even at that price he is still making money. It's the 9's and 8's in modern that the big submitters get hurt on. The 10's don't bring the big $$$ as consistently as they used to, but any modern card that gets at least $12 is equal to doubling your investment.

I just did a quick look and it doesn't look very promising IMO.
